They are saying the first round of direct deposit is going out this weekend.    I have read various reports as to how it will work, no two the same. Generally they say:

The IRS used either of a person's 2018 or 2019 1040s for the first round stimulus (the $1,200 one, CARES act). (Whichever 1040 they had, as far as address or direct deposit info was what they used to sent out the payments.)

For  Stimulus #2 ($600) they used only 2019's 1040 and didn't use the 2018 1040 information even if that was all that was on file and what they used successfully for Stimulus #1. If your 2019 1040 was not processed by the time they sent out stimulus #2, you will have to request the credit for it on line 30 of the 1040 for 2020. There was an option, open until 21 Nov 2020 (?) where you could put your contact/bank information into the IRS website online if you didn't have to file or if your paperwork hadn't been processed yet (if you had any clue that was the case) and that entry should have gotten you a payment for stimulus dos. That's been shut down since then and so the line-30 request is pretty much the only option to try to get that second and/or first payment.

For stimulus #3, I have seen info that says they're using the same method as they did for stimulus #2 - your 2019 tax-year 1040 unless they have already processed your 2020 tax year 1040. If you did not file for 2019 and have filed for 2020 already and  your 2020 return has not yet been processed, you may be able to file an amended return to collect the $1,400 per person (payment 3 of 3). Because you probably won't get one even if you should (except for SS recipients). If you get social security, but have not filed for 2019 or 2020 (or they've not been processed yet) the IRS knows how to reach you and should be sending at least $1,400 via the information the SSA has on you. At least, that's what I've seen go by in the press. God only knows.

This last stimulus payment (#3) allows you to claim $1,400 per dependent, and dependents include college-age students this year. But unless you have them listed as dependents on a processed 1040 (either 2019 or 2020) it looks like you'll have to do the amended return to claim the credit for them retroactively. Assuming the IRS doesn't do something proactive, such as  re-opening the online portal so that people could get their information properly input into the IRS database for maybe a "do-over" processing run sometime in the future, but I'm not holding my breath on that.

I have also read that Biden has issued a memorandum to the IRS to make all possible efforts to find people due to receive a stimulus payment and see that they actually get one. I would hope that would involve looking at the 2018 returns as well as 2018 and 2020.  I'm assuming not.

Thanks Nan, I hope your sources are correct. Our son in England got payments 1 and 2 paid directly into his US bank based on his 2018 and/or 2019 returns so hopefully he can expect to see payment number 3 in due course. (He has not yet filed his 2020 return).

Lots of great info here. Thanks!

I did my 2020 taxes yesterday. Whew. So easy when you know to fill out the form for foreign earned income. Otherwise tax somewhere doesn't seem to realize I live in the UK. The software won't let me e-file because I don't have a tax ID number for my husband, who isn't American. I did receive the first stimulus check but not the second. Though, I should receive it once this return gets processed as it's listed as a refund.

I did hear from the IRS a few months ago to verify my identity (by mail). They hadn't processed my 2019 taxes yet, but I think it should be done now. Is there a way to check?

I'm not sure what will happen about the 3rd stimulus payment. guess I need to see if my taxes were processed for 2019, as this may be holding it up. It looks like some people are still getting check #2. Is this true?

Thanks for any and all help!

You can check here on the status of your payment

https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment

a link on this site takes you to the site below where your SSN and address should be enough to check the status ...

Just be aware they closed the status of payment portal down a few months ago (late January, I think) and have not been updating it since then. If it doesn't show you were mailed or direct deposited a stimulus payment for Stimulus 1 or 2, you need to use line 30 on the 1040 form to request the credit. (At least, that's what the IRS said.)  It looks very much like they plan to update the page soon as there is now language on it about the 2021 (#3)stimulus on it that was not there last week.

You can check the "where's my refund" page to see if your 1040 has been processed.

EDIT:  12/3 -  They are now reporting in the media that the "Get My Payment" will go live again on Monday.  https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment

They are also saying the following (they being the media):

"Taxpayers who have provided bank information with the IRS will receive the direct-deposit payments, while others will get paper checks or debit cards mailed to them. Officials said in the interest of speeding up the relief payments, the IRS will use the latest tax return available, either the 2019 return filed last year or the 2020 return that is due by April 15.

If a person's job situation changed last year because of the pandemic, which led to millions of people losing jobs or being forced to work reduced hours, officials said that the IRS will adjust the size of the new impact payments after the 2020 return has been filed and provide a supplemental payment if that is called for. Officials said those adjustments will be made automatically by the IRS for people who have already filed their 2020 returns.  Officials said they wanted to handle the payments this way rather than waiting for the 2020 tax return to be filed in the interest of speeding payments to taxpayers."

So today we received a letter dated 18th Feb (that’s how long it took for us to reach here!) and it basically says that within 7 days from the date of the letter (ha) we will receive the 2.0 stimulus via check or debit card.

Did anyone else get one of these letters and then go on to receive the payment? Who knows when (if) it will show up!

That's encouraging - still haven't received anything but good to know we might hear soon!

I received a letter sometime around the 24th of February stating the same thing. My letter was printed on the 1st of February if I recall correctly, but I still haven't received a check. I've moved in the last year, so I have mail forwarding set up, so no idea if I'll be getting the check or not. Also REALLY annoying that I'm waiting for a check considering that I've always given my info for direct deposit, but whatever (I received my first payment via check).

You would think that they would just send the cheque out like they did the first time round rather than send a letter to say it is on its way!

I got a letter with the first check too saying my check was on the way. Which arrived a week after the check did.

Same here, it freaked me out to get a letter from the IRS after the check arrived. I've basically come to terms with the fact that my second check has probably been lost in the mail at this point OR that they have a bag of international ones just sitting in a mail room somewhere that have been forgotten  ;D

Yes. I received it in the middle of February or thereabouts.
