Specialist tax preparers for international tax also checks
« on: January 07, 2021, 11:54:14 AM »
Hello! I have just discovered that the US  requires folks to file even if they have not worked or lived in the US. I was unaware. I have not filed since I worked in the US and have lived here since 2018.  What I am asking is if there is any firm that is known for dealing with this type of tax return or an organization that helps. Should I file all the way back to 2018? I only work part-time for the past two years and worked full time only for a short while.  I do not want to mess it up doing it myself.  The second part of my question is when I file is there a link or an organization to find out if I qualify for the $600 checks given out recently on both occasions?  Thanks!

The Us requires citizens, green card holders and those who meet the substantial presence test to file US tax returns and be taxable on there worldwide income. There are certain circumstances where filing can be avoided by filing certain forms or you may not even meet the threshold to file. If you don't have a filing requirement there is still a method to apply for the stimulus checks. If you want more information please let me know. Adam at 1040 tax ltd Manchester UK

most folks would use the official penalty-free IRS Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures (SFOP) as the lowest risk and lowest cost way of catching up. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/u-s-taxpayers-residing-outside-the-united-states

Golden Rules for choosing a great tax professional when in the UK:
1. QUALIFICATIONS
Do not be shy! Ask if they are members of professional bodies in both the US and UK and if so, which ones and for how long.
2. COST
Ask what they charge!
3. COMFORT
Pick one who is dually US/UK qualified (so you know that the tax preparer is regulated in both the US and the UK) and who you feel you can get on with. This is a personal choice so call a few firms before deciding...
