Filling taxes from the U.K. -help
« on: January 21, 2021, 09:24:10 PM »
Hello everyone,

I just need a bit of guidance about my USA taxes, so I moved to the U.K. in august of 2015. I filled my taxes for 2015 as I did work in the USA up to the date I moved! From the moment I moved to the U.K. I didn’t work up until august of 2020, I am in full time employment. So I did filled 2016 but didn’t input any income as I didn’t make any and I filled married filling separately because my husband is British and didn’t want to include his income as it wasn’t required. So my question now that I actually have declare my income earned in the U.K. how do I do that? I tried turbo tax but I can’t input the information of my income as it is not an actual w2? I am totally clueless, I didn’t file for 2018 as I read on the irs website I didn’t need to cause I didn’t have any income. Any help will be greatly appreciated it!! I am trying to file my taxes now but I have no idea where to start!

My son and I use TurboTax to file from the UK. I’m retired and don’t have earned income but my son does work in the UK and also uses TT to file. TurboTax does support foreign addresses and foreign income. He keeps it simple since he has no other foreign income so files form 2555 to exclude all his foreign wages. The wages do appear on line 1 of the 1040 as if a W2 had been entered, they are reversed on line 7a.

When I enter my UK pensions I enter a substitute 1099-R and that comes up with form 4852  (Foreign Earned Income Exclusion) which is labeled as a substitute form for a W2 or 1099-R.  I claim the UK taxes I have paid on my pensions using form 1116. (Foreign tax credits).
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016
