Recommended Tax Software
« on: January 22, 2021, 02:12:36 PM »
Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but given how things change, I thought I'd look for an up to date recommendation.

Can anyone recommend tax preparation software that is fairly comprehensive and can be used for expat filing? I'm UK based, without a US mailing address (which seems to be a limiting factor for some software). I'm fairly tax literate but want something that covers (in addition to the standard 1040, F1116, F6251 etc) forms 5471, 8938 and 8833 (tax treaty position due to SIPP pension) - hopefully not too expensive!

I've managed my own paper filing in the past (along with FBAR filings)  but given the IRS mail backlog and an unresolved query from 2017 on a Capital Gain, it's time to use software.

Thanks for any responses.

I use TurboTax while living in the UK and I'm a USC. I use my UK address within TT and it supports foreign addresses, and substitute 1099-R forms for my UK private pensions.

I can confirm the following:

It does support forms 1116, 6251, and 8938.

I don't know about form 5471 but it definitely does not support form 8833 for e-filing. If 8833 is required to take treaty position(s) then you must print the form(s) and do a paper filing.

Thanks!

Sadly Turbotax/Intuit won't let me register for an account using a UK phone number - a common problem for a lot of software. Should have kept my address in Hawaii from 25 years ago (one place I'd rather be right now - but that's another story!)

That's why I maintain a US telephone number with Skype.  Actually, you prompted me to check my personal details on my Intuit account and while the phone number is correct the address  is a few years out of date so I just changed it to my daughter's address in California.

When I use TT, I purchase a copy I can download, and my son files his taxes from my laptop.

I've used TaxAct for years and it support many of the forms/schedules that those overseas require. I have a VOIP phone which sends and receives text messages OK. If your payment card is not associated with a U.S. address, there are work around as payments will be denied otherwise.

This is the problem with the online tax programs. I've been using TT but putting in our old US address/phone numbers etc.....which of course isn't correct. Is there a program that you can use without lying through your teeth?

I've been using TT (downloaded version) and putting in our UK address and telephone number when filing our taxes. No problem there.

To buy it I have to use a US credit card with a US address.

And there is the problem......I need to make something up/lie/cheat/steal to do it. I always feel guilty.....

I have a US credit card I use once a year for this reason. Then I put in our old address......they haven't shot me yet. But I'm waiting.....
