1st US Passport for UK Born Child?
« on: April 05, 2021, 11:23:16 PM »
My wife (UK citizen) and I (US citizen) want to get my sons 1st US passport arranged.  I am aware we have to arrange an appointment for him at the US embassy in London.  Does anyone have a link of where to book the appointment (struggling to find one myself).  Is it similar to booking the biometrics appointment where new ones are released at midnight?

My son was only born in September 2020, thankfully his passport will not cost near as much as my visa lol

Congratulations!  The embassy is only issuing emergency passports for travel within the next 72 hours!  Been that way since March 2020.  The backlog when they reopen will be HUGE!

Congratulations, yes!

I am in the process of renewing my US passport so have been poking around the site. You can try this link https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/birth/ if you haven't already. But KFDancer is right (as is always the case!)...they are not booking appointments unless travel is urgent/booked. From the website: Due to the impact of COVID-19 and associated national restrictions, the U.S. Embassy in London and the Consulates in Belfast and Edinburgh are offering emergency appointments only for passport and citizenship services that require an in-person appearance.
Further explanation is offered here: https://uk.usembassy.gov/information-for-american-citizens-following-the-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak/ and here: https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/contact-passport-unit/passport-enquiries-form/

I am sorry for the milestones your family will miss. Unfortunately, it has been that kind of year.

I feel your pain immensely. My daughter was born March 2020 and we haven't been able to get an appointment either. I've been checking obsessively because I need her SSN so I can claim her on my US tax return as it's beneficial for me to do so, but it my hands are tied until they open up.

100% with you on this one!!

Our son was born March 2020 and the US Embassy has been all but closed except emergencies for the last year. Not only can't we claim him as a dependent on US taxes this last year, but all of the stimulus payments we get no credit for him either. It is beyond frustrating!

I can't even fathom the backlog they will be facing and how long it will take to get an appointment. Quite disappointing.

Not even kidding, my kids passports expire summer of 2022 and I suspect we won’t be able to get those renewed easily!

I just sent my US passport for renewal on 7 April, so we'll see how quickly they deal with that. I know it's MUCH more complicated for new passports and babies, but I'm curious to find out how long a standard renewal will take. My neighbour just did hers and it took less than a month.

Does it take longer for kids' passports, KFdancer? Or are they typically done in person?

Adult passports are easy and you’ll have it back quickly.

For kids, new and renewals both parents must be present (along with the kid) at the embassy or a consulate.  So it’s in person and you have to take them out of school.  It’s a whole “thing”.

Yes, same! I am very frustrated. Those stimulus payments are also another thing on my mind. I also find the total lack of communication on their plans to resume services appalling. I’m about to write to the Ambassador, whether or not it makes any difference, because they still haven’t provided any updates on their website...

I had no idea--that is very annoying! You'd think they would have a more efficient system these days.

It’s efficient once there. Doesn’t take any time. And as a passport is the most “valued” documentation it makes sense.  Doesn’t mean it isn’t UTTERLY annoying!

Especially if you live nowhere near an embassy/ consulate, eg the North or Southwest... when we took the daughter to do her crba in 2019, we left the house at 5am and got back around 10pm - a very long day for us, never mind a baby!!!

Just an update for everyone. I randomly had a glance at the booking website this week and there were 3 days showing next week, with only 1 appointment left. I very hastily put my details in and managed to grab the last slot!!

It looks like they are starting to open CRBA appointments. Keep an eye out.
