We lived in Dumfries for 18 months with work between 1985 and 86 so my information is way out of date, but we loved taking visitors to Caerlaverock Castle
https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/caerlaverock-castle/, and to Threave garden and estate
https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/threave-garden.
We were with my parents and our small children in Threave in 1986 and got caught in a downpour which turned out to be a few days after Chernobyl exploded and it was the peak time for radioactive rain in SW Scotland.
There was a pub I used to frequent with some work mates and the first time we went I was told we were going because they served single malt in 1/4 gill measures (as opposed to a 1/5 gill elsewhere in Dumfries and 1/6 gill in England). However I was told the pub was a bit rough, and the only way to tell the difference between the men and women was that the women took the cigarette out of their mouth before spitting.
We enjoyed our time in Dumfries, made some good friends and had great neighbours, the only complaint was that it rained a LOT while we lived there.
