Moving house - do I need to update the IRS?
« on: June 02, 2021, 09:16:15 PM »
Hi all
We are moving house and I was wondering if:
  • We should notify the IRS (taxes already filed under the old address) or should just wait for the next tax return?
  • Is there an easy way to do it online?

Thanks!

While living in the USA we moved States 4 times, address 6 times, and never informed the IRS except on the next tax return so I don’t think it really matters. When we moved from the USA to England we did not inform them except when we filed our first tax return many months after we moved. (We are dual citizens).

Maybe we should have informed them each time, I don’t really know.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016

No apparent obligation to inform them - I was back in the UK for 20 years before I came clean! (but that's another story). ;D

This from the early noughties may help:

More relevant if you're looking for a refund.

I would inform them as this also sends an update to SS. Even though I had forwarded my mail, a CP notice explaining a refund, an EIP issue on line 30 did then make it to my new address. However another IRS letter had an old address on it and this went to that address as they will not forward. Luckily I was informed by the occupants of that letter. There is a form or maybe you can do online if you have an account. I would have been stuck not knowing why TaxAct software had made the wrong line 30 calculation and of the IRS recalculation otherwise.
