So our daughter is 17 and coming under our ILR application, which we should have sometime next month, as we paid for priority processing.  It occurred to me though, as I was looking ahead at the citizenship application requirements, by next autumn, she will be 18, and I believe they will want to see proof that she passed the Life in the UK test? If so, we could have her take it, but it is a hassle and she has A levels next summer.  I also see that there is a way for a child who was born in the UK (as she was, in Scotland, when my husband was in his PhD program), to parents who were not settled at the time, to apply for citizenship right away as soon as those parents do get ILR.  It has to be done before that child is 18, so I am thinking as soon as we get ILR, we could apply for her to get citizenship? Then the rest of us would apply a year from now as originally planned.  Am I thinking correctly? Here is the info:

I started a fake application for her on  the website, thinking we might be caught out by the fact that we were in Canada for 10 years in between living in Scotland and England, but it didn't ask anything about that

Yup. Form MN1. I’m sure you’ve already seen this, but:

You can register as a British citizen if the following apply:
They were born in the UK
• they were not British citizens at birth because at the time neither parent was a
British citizen or settled
• while they are minors either of the parents has since become a British citizen or
settled in the UK
• they are under the age of 18 on the date the application is received
• they are of good character if over the age of 10

Registering is also £1012 versus £1300 for citizenship + £50 for the LIUK test.  So you’ll save over £300 and not have to have her take the test.  Easy decision!
