Vanguard EFT Excess Reportable Income data?
« on: December 23, 2021, 09:56:10 AM »
Where can I find the Excess Reportable Income data for Vanguard EFTs? I have VOO and VTI purchased and held through Vanguard in the US, but I can't find the data.

I found some reports on the Vanguard UK site, but they don't cover the US EFTs - https://www.vanguardinvestor.co.uk/investing-explained/general-account-tax-information

The VOO and VTI are HMRC reporting funds - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/offshore-funds-list-of-reporting-funds

Any thoughts?

Maybe contact Vanguard, this is what I usually do. Send a secure message while logged onto your account and I find that they are usually back with a response within 48 hours.

I also hold a Vanguard ETF but it is on their US site vanguard.com. I just noticed that your links are to vanguard.co.uk

Thanks - I'll drop them a message. I provided vanguard uk URLs as I couldn't find anything on the vanguard.com site about ERI.

I’ll be interested in what they say as I have been reporting dividends and gains on shares sold on my VYM ETF account with Vanguard US.

Where do you get the excess reportable income data from for VYM?

There is none that I am aware of.  Here is the 2020 list of funds with excess reportable income.  I don't see VYM or VTI in that list.

That's my problem. VOO and VYM are funds that have excess reportable income. VYM has a CUSIP id of 921946406 and an ISIN of US9219464065, which is in the HMRC list (row 86205). But I can't find the excess income to report. I don't think either would have a zero ERI, so I'm assuming that I haven't found the report.

https://advisors.vanguard.com/iwe/pdf/taxcenter/TIDQAUK.pdf

For example, on page 102 you'll find VYM from April 2021

Not the easiest document to use (or find in the first place) but it's got all the info.

That's excellent! many thanks!

BTW, we pay income tax on the ERI, but do we reduce our capital gains tax when we sell, or do we get double taxed on these gains?

My (very non expert on this topic) understanding is yes - there shouldn't be any double taxation. But not entirely clear on how the mechanics work.

Monevator has a good writeup on ERI, but even then still not 100% clear: https://monevator.com/excess-reportable-income/
