Well although ID .me might not be long for this world, I had a go at registering this morning. Here's my experience:

Firstly I'd tried previously but failed due to the non-US address and non-US phone number. ID.Me had sent me an email asking if I wanted to continue or go directly to the video referee - I hadn't really paid attention to that previously, but selected that option. This took me to a different registration page and allowed me to enter my UK address, didn't ask for any telephone number. Then uploaded copies of my passport, social security card and a UK utility bill (Vodafone broadband).

This then took me to the waiting room - my wait time was 7 Minutes - YES - SEVEN MINUTES!!!!

I was actually in to the call in less than 4 minutes, video verification took about 3 or 4 minutes and that was it. Email received, and I'm into my IRS account.

I started and submitted my documents @ 9:58am this morning.

At least I now know the IRS has not yet processed my 2020 paper filed return (my own fault as I field late - mid December).

The moral of the story is to start the process when the U.S. is nicely tucked up. They have 24/7 support, so making the time difference work in our favour is the best option. You had a super fast experience - they are pretty slick with sign up once engaged.

I do wonder how the VA, SAA and multitude of other agencies will deal with ID.me. Even with the IRS looking for an alternative, will the other agencies resist change and stay with ID.me. My guess will be other non bio authentications for sign up - but ID.me here in the longer term

Got into my SS account also - to be told my benefit application has completed 2 of the 3 stages - nothing more than that.

At least good to feel more connected than had been the case previously.

7 minutes wait is amazing, truly amazing.

I really don't mind the one-off identification process of uploading documents, and it is great to finally be able to log onto my IRS account.  The current 2FA requires entry of a code from the ID.me authenticator app.  If the IRS change their authentication method I hope they don't break what exists now.  I can just see them requiring a US cell number or something similar.

Just wondering if anything has changed with ID.me that anyone is aware of?

I can successfully log in to my IRS account with no issues. Unfortunately I no longer seem to be able to use ID.me to access My Social Security - every time I go through 2FA it just take me back to the log-in screen - has anyone else had difficulties recently?

I don't know for sure, but I believe each government agency needs to be set up on your account. I did see something on my profile, (I think) of:

https://www.id.me

If you log into your actual account and not the IRS bit, have a look and check that you still have permissions. Perhaps your SAA account log in has been disabled, or needs verification. With the facial recognition, maybe you need to agree to new terms. Hope this helps

Just got in to my account - cleared cookies and that seemed to work.

Didn't expect (stupid me!) that SSA would be using cookies, but that's probably how they track site visitors. Either that or the Russians are closer than we think - which is already way too close!!!

Although an older thread, I thought to go ahead and add the experience I had yesterday signing-up for ID.me, as things went very swiftly! (I began the process at 15.00ish BST.)

For primary and secondary sources*, I was required to submit photos (uploaded by text link from my phone) of the following: US and UK passports' photo pages, a Council Tax bill dated no more than 90 days ago, my Social Security card, and a 'selfie', also directly from my phone. Note: I did have the choice to upload from a different device if wanted.

They were then submitted for review, with a positive reply within three minutes. Then prompted to wait for the video call, with a wait time listed as less than eight minutes. I think this took just four minutes or so before being invited to the video call. Fielded a few very general questions, then had to show each document, some both front and back.

So it seems they've fine-tuned some things (particularly with regard to time needed for the process), which is wonderful news for those open to a bit of a privacy jump to have immediate access to SSA and the IRS. Indeed, within minutes of saying goodbye on the video call, I was able to sign-in to both sites.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in this thread. I'm really grateful to have this new access.

* Edited to add: there's quite an array of combinations of primary and secondary sources available to use (i.e., there are many combinations of sources that one can use to satisfy the requirements, not just the one I've outlined above).

Thanks for this update, great news, especially the now short wait time for the video appointment.
