Yes you can. From the Home Office website:

What is my immigration status while my application is being decided?

If you make an application before your authorised stay ends, your existing immigration status will continue until your application is decided, even if the decision is not made until after the end of your permitted stay. If your existing visa or other permission to stay here allows you to work, you can continue to do so until your case is decided.

thanks very much!

It's nice to have that in writing, isn't it?  Otherwise, their requirements wouldn't make much sense - you can't apply more than 28 calendar days before your visa expires, you can apply by post, but except to take at least 20 WORKING days - so visas are definitely going to expire unless everyone goes in person!

I hope everyone who is waiting gets their visa soon!

I still haven't and I sent mine in a month before you.  >:(

I know there have been other people, though, who sent theirs in a matter of days before me and they've had theirs back for some time now.

Wow, I sent mine in a few days before yours then and I've had mine back for over a month now! Hope it arrives soon!

Are you sure there wasn't any complications?  It doesn't make sense that this has taken so long.

Well, I certainly didn't think there was anything complicated about it, but now I'm obviously starting to worry. We have loads of jointly addressed bills and individually addressed mail from at least 10 different sources. I provided bank statements and pay slips and we make more than enough to support ourselves without recourse to public funds but I even included budget just to show our monthly breakdown. I spent ages on the application going through every line and guidance to make sure I didn't accidentally leave anything out. And I haven't been contacted for any further information at all. I know in the acknowledgement letter I got from them, it said "We will let you know if your application is going to take longer than our standard turnaround time" (or something to that effect), but I don't know if they actually do that or not.

The one thing  I'm slightly worried about is that we live in a block  of flats and if you get a delivery slip, the postie just hangs it half in/half out of the letterbox so its very easy for someone to just be a bit of an ars* and pull it out. So it is a bit frustrating because I don't know if something like that has happened because the website says not to call them until 14 weeks has passed.  :-\\\\
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

If you are genuinelly concerned that the package may have been delivered and you may have missed it, then call.

But will they even talk to you if it's not been 14 weeks?  I've always hated that they send things Recorded Delivery instead of Special (because Special carries insurance).

Yes. Call them.

There is no insurance on Special Delivery when documents are enclosed by the way. If your docs are lost, you get zip.

Well I just got off the phone with them and I was informed they couldn't give me any information due to the fact that it had not yet been 14 weeks. She said all she could do was double check that they had my correct address, which they obviously did. Starting to really freak out a bit now.  :-\\\\

That really sucks.  I can't believe they wouldn't even tell you if it had been sent yet or not, just to save the worry of it being improperly delivered.  Sorry you are so frustrated, Kayla.  Hopefully it will come in very soon and you won't have to worry about it ever again!
