I am most likely moving back to NY next month and want to know what you think the best way to move approximately 4 suitcases of stuff back would be. I am most likely flying Continental back which does have an allowance of extra bags but it might be more costly than having a moving company. I'm in Northern Ireland. Any suggestions? I've already thrown away and donated what I could but need what I have left. I really don't have a heck of a lot of money as fares are extortionate. I'm still not sure when or if I'm going but I'm about 85% there in mind.

Thanks

Did you have any luck with this?  We are thinking of moving back too and not sure how to transport a few extra bits that we have.  Even thought of going via cruise ship so the extra luggage would not be a problem.

We got 4 suitcases, 3 huge boxes (you know.. duvets, pillows, frying pans, cat food and litter..) and the cat on the plane home with excess charges only applied to the cat.  Not sure how, except that we flew business class.  Maybe an upgrade from economy would get your stuff on?  No idea how much the tickets were, though.

I just got off the phone with Continental. The representative said you can take extra bags up to 50 pounds at $150 per piece (the website says $100 but whatever) I asked if there was a limit. He said no but then laughed and explained that he told another customer that and he showed up at the airport with 40 pieces! So, he said 5 or 6 total or one or two more than that would be fine but not to push it at 40. I trust that he's right but Belfast is really small as an airport in comparison so I'm a bit worried. He told me that I had nothing to worry about but to be prepared to pay. I told him I didn't mind as this was much easier and faster than using a moving company.

I'm still in two minds about what I'm doing but this helps push me back to the states.
