Mexican Restaurants in London
« on: September 19, 2002, 03:31:15 PM »
Hello!

I know this is a forum for American food stuff but America is a land of many ethnic groups. ;)

I'm a woman on a mission for a Mexican restaurant in London.  I actually live in Greater Manchester but I have accepted that there is no Mexican restaurant to be found up here :'( but I am staying in London for a day where my chances of finding one are better.  I know that there's a chain called 'Chiquitos' which is really not what I am looking for but one that could be a bit more authentic.  Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Marty-Robbins-Gal,

I know this is probably gonna break you're poor lil' heart, but I'm afraid that there just isn't anything authentic about the Mexican food here.  I know, it's hard to beleive but I have had one horrifying experience after another!  I've been here 18 months now and have looked trust me!(One place I went to had a buffet and there wasn't a singe tortilla in the joint!!!  Not a one!)

All I can say is....DONT DO IT!!!

Chaquito is okay in some of the ones I've been in, if you keep your standards low, of course....but at all costs, avoid the one at Leicester Square.  All I can say is....ew.  Ew. Ew. Ew!

I'm sorry that it's not better news, darlin! If you come and prove me wrong somewhere, I'd love to hear about it!!!

I haven't been to the Texas Embassy (yes, that's the name) for years but it does have TexMex food. It's right across across from Trafalgar Square.

I agree with Wish about Chiquitos. I keep trying to give it a chance but it's disgusting.

I understand there's a Chilis, but don't know its exact location. I never really felt that was true ethnic, but not having had decent Mexican for years, I'd go.

i agree with the others...chiquitos is NOT the place to go.

there are 2 other mexican places i've heard of but not tried...maybe someone else on the board has?

down mexico way is one, just off regent street down a little alley-looking road (if you're on regent street you can see it if you look down a side road).  it's nearer the picadilly circus end.  this was recommended to me by an english pal some 6 years ago.  the place is still there, and i think has latin-style dancing and music.

i can't remember the name of this place, but it's just around the corner from covent garden and claims to have the best mexican food in london.  my american pals and orb does not want to go there, been disappointing for mexican every time so far and they say not worth the chance.

chili's is at canary wharf.  tastes like the US.  great fajitas and ribs! the tortillas and dip appetizer is fresh-fried and is WONDERFUL.  avoid TGIFriday's in london. very hit or miss, and the service i have found to be always bad.

in manchester, i think there is a nando's, the peri-peri chicken place? i use that as a mexican substitute (there is one near where i live).  the sauces are spicy and tasty, pretty relaxed atmosphere and although not mexican it does me fairly well!

good luck!
