You only need to do in person if you need your passport back quickly.

Really glad it worked out so easy!

I think we were saying that you can apply in whatever name you wish, but that it will always be issued in the same name as the passport, which coincides with what you were told.

Vicky

No, sorry I wasn't clear. The guy in Croydon told me I could have the Visa in my married name and have it put in my old passport with my maiden name-which I knew sounded too good to be true!

They won't even let you apply in your married name unless it matches your passport. It would be silly to apply in your married name anyway if you know your passport isn't changed yet.

They *will* let you apply in your married name...I did it last week!  But as you say, it is pointless.

Yeah, you can fill out the form in your married name all day long...they'll still issue the visa in whatever name is in the passport.

That's weird that the law isn't written anywhere.

I think I would have laughed at that point.  I wanna go home to get my cat and spend a bit of time in a place where it actually feels like May.

ETA: It occured to me add that laughing hysterically and then becoming super calm is my way of dealing with shock.  I'm sure it has it's benefits, as most coping mechanisms do.
