...no apple fritters tempting me.

I remember getting apple fritters before from a Dunkin' Donuts in northern Virginia that were as big as the circumference of your head!  OMG, those were good apple fritters -- but I never found them as big at other Dunkin' Donuts throughout the US, as those were in/around Alexandria.

Having only had ONE American doughnut in the last 20 years (my mom took me to Krispy Kreme once), it's very easy to forget what they're like.
But i do like the miniature chocolate iced ones you get in supermarkets here... you get a bucket of like 20 or so.  They're nice!

I've had those, but usually think they're too dry.  I prefer the cake-like doughnuts really (as opposed to yeast though I've had good ones of those -- the hot & just out of fryer ones dripping with syrup or sugar that I'd get with dorm friends on university evenings come to mind).  I've been spoilt since then on the Baskin Robbins/Dunkin' Donuts standard, I'm afraid.  I think I ate enough of that to keep the chain in business! :-[ :P :)

Those little choc frosted donuts you get in the bucket here taste a lot like those little packs of Hostess donuts you get in the States. You know you can get the choc ones or the powdered sugar ones.
Are they called Bucket of Fun here?

i buy them in sainsburys (and i like them!) but im pretty sure sainsburys dont call them bucket of fun!

I have to agree with you about the those dougnuts I to think they are too dry as well a glass of milk cant even help them. [smiley=bleck.gif] I myself am a Krispy Kreme junkie. [smiley=smitten.gif]  I know not everyone likes Krispy Kreme that just more for us that do.  ;D In my hometown in Indiana there is a doughnut shop they make the best apple fritters not as big as your apple fritters Carolyn. after work mainly on friday mornings my friends an I would go an get a few douhnuts before they headed home we all worked the midnight shift.  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

I think Pebbles is right -- the 'Bucket of Fun' doughnuts remind me of the little packs of Hostess doughnuts back in the States.  (I didn't really like them either.) :)

Supermarketdoughnuts suck.  We get our doughnuts from Krispy Kreme.  We are lucky enough to have one anout 15 minutes away.  That's a double edged sword though.

back to the french toast - key thing to make it taste good is to fry it in real butter. I tried the low fat, low cal spray oil stuff and it doesn't taste good. You have to use the bad for you butter, not marg either, butter.

Now I want some! Best to let the bread get stale before you do it too, keeps the french toast from falling apart after being soaked with the egg mixture.
