Student Visas -vs- EEA/Swiss Nationals

But I thought providing you have the evidence they ask for in the UK EEA application forms, it's free and can be done from within the UK, as long as your Swiss wife comes to the UK as a Swiss national? As far as I know, anyway.

You would be applying to the UK for an EEA permit, as far as I understand, and therefore, would need what the UK government asks for, not the Swiss government.

So I'd check what's asked for on those links and see if anyone else has any other thoughts on the matter. Could save you a bundle.

It can't really be done from within the UK - he might actually be refused entry anyway if he came as a visitor when he intended to settle.

But he would be on a student visa, not as a visitor...I know it's possible to do the FLR(M) while in the UK as a student so I was thinking the same would apply for the EEA2.  Is there a rule against this?

(and while I'm thinking of it- if there was a similar case of an American coming to the UK for studies who just happened to be married to a dual US/UK citizen living in the US...would it be okay if the American obtained a student visa thinking they weren't planning on staying in the UK and then applying for FLR(M) later on after having a change of heart?  This is strictly hypothetical, just curious.)

Switching from Student to Spouse of an EEA national?  No, sounds fine to me.  Though pointless to enter as a student if he qualified for the EEA.
