New stuff for a Convenience store? Opinions, please!
« on: May 08, 2007, 01:36:57 PM »
The convenience store just handed me a catalogue and told me to order what I think people would like... or what I would like. It's from marigold.  The selection is huge.  Not sure how much money I'm allowed to spend...  but the minimum order is low, so I can try a few things and see what happens.

Most is organic, lots is vegetarian, lots is freetrade.  Sounds good... if people want it and will pay extra for it.

Stuff I know is good/people will want:  goji berry juice, acai juice, Innocent juices.   Smoked chipotle Chili sauce.  Agree?

Stuff I'm very unsure of:  herbal supplements, crystal deodorants, organic shampoos, toothpastes, etc.  It seems like the staff would need a lot of education in order to deal with these things.   Goat/sheep bio-yoghurt?  They have a lot of Japanese products, not sure if people want them here.  Root beer, they have.  Sasperilla, too.  Do people here like it?

There are a gazillion seitan, tempeh and tofu products. Mince, hotdogs, burgers,  mock turkey, bacon... and regular blocks of plain/smoked/herbed stuff.  I'm a bit worried, though.  I always thought the UK was a vegetarian paradise, until I got here.  (I'll order a few things for our house for now.)

This is not proper market research, I don't work at the store...  I just don't want to end up buying everything myself out of guilt if it doesn't sell.  So, if you guys can just give me some clues about what you'd like/buy, that would be great!

Is it this one? I love Marigold bouillon powder.  I'm a bit confused about what you want though, are you saying people can order stuff through you? Or you just want to give feedback to the store as to which products might be popular?

No, no personal profit/interest here... I just have to order for the local store.  Their English isn't that great, and they have no idea what a lot of the stuff in the catalogue is.

Yep, just another thing your local ESL teacher does for no pay...

Oh, and yes, that's the company.  They wholesale a TON of other products as well, though.

Oh I see! You're helping them out! Well I would definitely get the green tub & purple (Low salt) tub bouillon powders, they are very nice and since a lot of the supermarkets have them now they must sell pretty well.   What a pity the other link isn't working I'd be interested to see what else there is.

Veggie substitutes will be good if there is no other place nearby that has them (ie Sainsbury, Waitrose, Tesco...)

Flouride free toothpaste *could* be a good sale if marketed.

Ordered a few things, we'll see how it goes.  I found out we have a 'safety' in the form of a sister store which ONLY stocks organic stuff.  They'll take anything that doesn't sell here.  Great!

Veggie dogs, mince, 'bacon', tempeh and smoked seitan are on their way.  Also quail eggs, tofu milk, a bunch of Innocent drinks... various breads, loads of the trendy goji berry juice.

The shop is in a good location for almost anything.  It's difficult to get to Sainsburys and Tesco from the area, especially if you're walking.  Most people around here are wealthy, and have been asking for more organic stuff.  Tourist traffic is high.  I am just wary of spending other people's money... but it should be OK.
