Absolutely! The shoplifting bit!!!!  Being afraid that people will look at you funny, or 'check' you at the door....
Well- as for the trollies, i really can't use one... I live in the sticks, and the closest post-office/shop grocer is 5 min by car, and the closest real-grocer is about 15... So- while the trek would be scenic, it's going to become VERY unseasonable here shortly!
But- I still use reusable cloth bags to put all my groceries in.  Anyhow I HATE how you have to pack all your own stuff!  The funny thing is, I also used to hate having someone else (who you know is being paid pittance!) do it for me!!  There is no happy medium!
But ya, here, I have this system now where as I go through the shop I separate all my items into 'categories'... Fruit/veg, cold/dairy/frozen, dry goods, household products, etc... Then, when I get to the check-out I put it all on the belt in order that I want it to come down so nothing gets crushed, and it's all organized!!!  But- i put all my items in my bags, in the cart as I'm shopping too- and I'm always a bit worried someone's gonna stop me one day and assume I'm trying to nick it all!!!  Oh well!  For now- it's my system and it works like a charm!! :P
love is a many splendid thing...

ETA: I just stick the stuff directly into my trolley when I'm in the supermarket. I don't use the store trolleys.

I did that once in Linlithgow Sainsbury's and was followed around by the shop security guard for the entire time i was there.  After i paid, and was wheeling out of the shop, he told me that i was making his job much more difficult than it needed to be, and told me that next time I must use a basket or one of the shop trollies.

 >:(  How annoying.

I used to go to the grocery with two babies in a double stroller.  I always put the groceries in the basket of the stroller and then put them on the conveyor at the end.  I got some funny looks but nobody ever confronted me, and after a while I think they got used to me.

I can't visualize a 4 wheeler. How about a photo of one.
I know what a 16 wheeler looks like ;D

There's a 4-wheeler here:

I kind of like this one... looks a bit less old-dearish:

Cheers! I was also having trouble thinking about what you were talking about.  I was actually thinking for some reason about those moving dolly's.  I like the crate one, that is nice!

Your not the only one! I was picturing everyone walking down the street with trolleys that looked exactly like the ones you get at the ASDA/Tesco/Sainsburys. The big ones with a seat for the kid. hehe  :)

I have seen trolleys advestised in the US with some kind of revolving sets of wheels so you can hump it up the steps easier. Don't remember where I saw them though  :-[
I always wanted one of those wicket type ones on two wheels and with just one wooden handle.  Thought I would adopt the old dear image  ;)  Like I always wanted to be one of those old Beacon Hill type ladies who walk everywhere in their sneakers and carry a big umbrella. Thought the umbrella would be useful for whacking passing cars as you try to cross the street. Trolley would be good for ramming annoying people.

Aha! Found it -- they're available from the Vermont Country Store: http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/browse/Home/For-The-Home/Household-Cleaning/Household-Helpers/Curb-Climber-Shopping-Cart/  Has anybody seen these or similar in UK?

I found it with a little perseverance. Thank you.

I like it better than the UK carts and of course the price is about a quarter of the UK one.

I got mine at a shop in York called  Barnitts.

I don't understand why in the UK, trolleys are associated with old people. In New York City, everyone uses them.

They used to be associated with older people in NYC years ago too; I bought one about 10 years ago and there weren't many 'younger' New Yorkers using them then.  I think it just caught on.  And, it sounds like it just might in the UK too -- judging from this thread and the excitement!   ;)  Pioneering!   ;D

It's that or don support stockings, a tartan skirt, mac and a nice wool jumper.
 :)

Don't take offense, but rock it out Mrs. Doubtfire!   ;)

Can't blame you though for lugging for the cat.
