Might have a look in the local rag for auctions. You can pick up some real bargains on tables, chairs, book cases, wardrobes, sideboards. At one time you could get beds and sofas but legislation has stopped that but I would not have touched them with a bargepole.
It's a good way to pass several hours on a Saturday morning or a Wednesday night and though there is a lot of junk, there are some real gems to be had. If you are nervous about bidding, you can leave bids rather than bidding directly. They normal have a viewing time and you can ask the people there for help or advice or even guide prices that the item may fetch. If anything, it is interesting.
I furnished my entire cottage for £9.50. I got 2 wardrobes, a table and 4 chairs, a sideboard, a TV stand and a bed frame. That was 30 years ago. But bargains can still be had.
Once you get established, you could look at antique auctions where you will get real furniture, none of this MFI crap. It will be pricier as you compete with dealers. But you have the upper hand in that you are buying for you and not to make a profit. And say you pick up a lovely bookcase, chances are you will profit when you come to sell it.
