It seems natural to say my UK mobile number as 07504 nnnnnn because the first 5 digits identify the operator. 07504 is one of the codes assigned to Virgin Mobile,

not anymore.
I have been through at least 3 mobile providers in the last 10 years and have always kept my same mobile number.

I say xxxxx xxx xxx.

This is what I normally do... or xxxx xxx xxx depending on how long the area code is since they can be different lengths. But I notice that many people just group them up in all sorts of ways! Especially if there are double numbers in there. For instance, in Newcastle, the area code is usually 0191, but if the number was 0191 11x xxx someone might say "019 treble 1 xxxx" or what have you.

Yes, there is provision for number portability of course, in that case the first 5 digits identify the operator you first used, which issued you that number. Also, in the UK calls to a number once it has been transferred are still routed via that original network.

This post made me smile. I thought I was the only one to never get it right. I still don't say it properly!  :P

My cell gets said 07** - *** - ****
My landline which isn't IN the city is done the UK way of ***** - *** - ***
But the numbers in the City only have 4 numbers in the area code.  so I say it 0141 - *** - ****, which is easier for me anyways.

Hubby says people do it in all different ways as well.  Which I find odd.  I couldn't imagine someone in the states saying 9995 - 554 - 444.  Know what I mean?

You should express a phone number as (area code that you need to dial first if you live outside the area) -- gap or pause -- (phone's own number that you dial if you live inside the area) but people who lived for years with 6 figure numbers in e.g. Nottingham Bristol Leicester etc can't easily adapt now that they have a 7 digit number.

Where I am there is no consistent way of saying or writing a phone number.  In my job, I deal with phone numbers a lot and I got in the habit of writing them down in the American way, 4-3-4 digit pattern so that I can tell right away if there are enough digits.  On our website, phone numbers are written in many, many different ways.  It drives me nuts.  (on our section though, it's always 4-3-4 because I look after it!).

More confusing, how do you write your UK number on a US based website form?! The number of times I've entered it 3 or 4 times because it won't accept it in the little boxes they put!
If you are accepting foreign applicationss or orders then set up your website to accomodate the differences you'll get.

Even more annoying was the last time I was trying to order, I selected UK from the dropdown menu, it changed all the boxes accordingly, so far so good I thought, but then would accept my postcode as 6 characters!
