Great tip, but I wish I'd seen this thread sooner... I'm moving in 2.5 weeks(!) and doubt I'd have time to do this. I think I have my strategy for getting a UK bank account all set, at least.
September 2009: Tier 1 visa
April 2011: Married
March 2012: FLR(M)
February 2012: SET(M) application submitted

you can apply once you're here too...

i got the nectar amex, it does not have an annual fee, and I get double points at sainsburys :)

my bank told me I had to wait for six direct deposit payments from my company, meaning six more months, before being able to get a credit card...  I told them by then I wont be their customer anymore... :)

I read about this before I moved over so I called up AmEx and was told that my card wasn't eligible to transfer to a UK card.  It's an American Airlines AmEx with Citibank (if that makes any difference) that I've had for about 2 years.  I was told that I could apply for a different US AmEx that might be eligible but I didn't find the time to before leaving.  Oh well.
