Just to try to keep things tidy rather than make a new thread for this--

DB has been seeking employment since he finished university in May. He still hasn't found anything, and finally decided to apply for Job Seeker's Allowance.

He was asked all sorts of questions, but I'm particularly concerned about all the questions he was asked about me.  We live together, and so I understand they need to know about what sort of income I have (I'm a student, so none...), but we're not married.  So wouldn't he be claiming as an individual? I'm just so confused as to why they needed to know if i work, if i'm a student, how many hours I attend university each week, my NIN (i dont have one), if I'm pregnant, etc. etc...

I also don't know if it was made entirely clear to them that I have no recourse to public funds. DB kept saying "She's American, so no" I tried to tell him to use the words "No Recourse to Public Funds" but he didn't ... I just want to make sure that he doesn't receive any extra money to support me, so that I'm not in breach of the terms of my visa.   What is the normal amount for someone on JSA to receive?

They've taken down my contact details, so maybe someone will follow up with me. But also, from the sound of things, DB said that I was being signed up for a NIN...but I don't understand how they can just sign me up for one without me actually doing it.

Does this sound normal? Thanks in advance

I don't know about the other stuff, but in terms of determining eligibility, living with a partner counts the same as being married. It would only not count if you were simply flatmates, but as his partner it is assumed that you share finances.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Thanks for clearing that up. (Now, if only I could skip the Post-Study work visa and go straight to Unmarried Partner...)--It does seem odd that the government can have it both ways though,--I'm considered married for benefit claims, but not for immigration purposes... Ho hum.  We have an appointment tomorrow, though I'm not entirely sure what I should bring.

Does anyone know the maximum a couple have in savings in order to qualify for JSA? I basically only have what I personally need in order to maintain myself for the next 4-5 months... (which amounts to about £3,400-- of which £800 needs to stay put for the PSW Maintenance, and another £600 is needed for the application fee). I don't have enough money to support the two of us though.

I'm thinking I'll print out my US bank statement and bring my UK bank statements, as well as print out the PSW Policy Guidance, so the JobCentre doesn't think I'm making things up, and that I'm not hiding anything...but, is there anything else I should do?

I'm just worried that he won't get the financial support because of my "savings", which will then be depleted by the time I have to apply for the PSW visa, so I'll have to go home, and then we'll no longer be living as a couple, and then have to start from scratch again. :(  I guess we'll find out soon enough...

Nevermind this last bit, I finally found this:

For income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, the amount may be less after your household income, pension and any savings of £6,000 or more are taken into account.
So I'll stop being stressed about it :)
