Estate agency asks for vehicle registration

Hi guys,

Just curious about this one. We found a flat we like and we're going through the referencing and paperwork with the agency. They gave me a bank slip to fill out so they can contact our bank to see how much money we have but then it asks for our vehicle registration at the bottom of the bank form. Does anyone know why that is?

Why don't you ask them?

It's probably parking related, but if you call them they'll tell you for sure, any reply here will just be speculation

I'm kind of uncomfortable by the amount of questions they're asking and it feels like they'll know everything about us. It's kind of creeping me out.

At the refuge I work at, we need car reg, tax and insurance details in order to allow clients to park their cars legally in our car park. There are all sorts of issues for us if we allow an uninsured, untaxed car to park here.

Maybe that might be why they want the info?

Oh that makes sense. Well we do have insurance and tax and everything so I guess I'm worrying for no reason.

When I lived in an apartment (this was in the States, 20+ years ago), they asked for our vehicle info simply to make sure that the people parking in their lot were actual tenants, and to know what car belonged to what tenant, in case there was a problem, like a break-in, snow removal, abandoned cars, etc.

Yep it's all starting to make sense to me now. I just think it's weird that they ask for it on the bank form 

Purely speculation here...but can't they tell what kind of car you own by the reg? The year and such...and hence the value of it? That's what popped into my head first as its on the bank info paper and they are looking at how much money you have.

Oh no, I hope not.  We have an old banger. But the flat we're going for is only £325/month (the usual crap we can afford) so hopefully they're not going to be b*tches about it. 

I wouldn't worry...could work in your favour not having an expensive car with expensive payments and expensive insurance 

I'm going to speculate ( ) that since the referencing process is all sorts of invasive with your personal info and is done by an independent company, not the estate agents, that they want to make sure you don't have huge monthly payments. The whole point of referencing is to make sure you have the income to cover rent. If you have car payments, your debt to income ratio could hurt the chances of passing referencing.

Since you don't, you have nothing to worry about!
