UK Car Insurance - Porting USA No Claims
« on: January 24, 2020, 05:20:10 PM »
I am the UK husband of a USA wife.  She is yet to arrive (first visa app rejected) but I hope and anticipate that she will be here soon.

This question actually counts for both of us as, although I am a UK citizen, I have been living in the US for the last 6 years (I am also a US citizen).

I am finding that with my absence, I am being treated like a fresh immigrant for the purposes of loans, insurances, etc.  I am looking at buying a pair of cheap cash cars and I'd like third party insurance on those but without a no claims bonus I'm looking at £600/year per car even for the most basic third party only cover.

I have heard tales of expats calling their old USA insurers who will provide evidence of no claims to prospective UK insurers.  Has anyone done this successfully?  I was insured with GEICO in the US and I'm not precious about who insures me here; I just want cheap!
Application for a spouse visa for my USA wife.  She and our one year old daughter remain in Houston whilst I await their arrival in Aberdeen.

You should be able to print out your claims history from geico's website, or by contacting their customer service. Each insurer will be different for whether they accept that though. Admiral and Aviva seem the most friendly towards insuring people who are starting fresh, but be prepared for eye-watering premiums for the first 12 months. I'm guessing you have a UK license so perhaps it won't be quite as bad. Good luck, generate a few quotes from the providers directly before making a decision.

When my son came back to the UK in 2017 he was insured with GEICO. He got car insurance in the UK with Aviva and their website gave the type of wording needed in a US No Claims letter, plus they needed a copy of his certificate.  He scanned in a copy of his certificate which he fortunately still had, and called them where he spoke with a very good agent who emailed him a PDF of the No Claims letter. He uploaded the 2 documents on the Aviva website and got his No Claims record established.
