i've found that with feeding Calvin, he is much more receptive to food when i am eating at the table with him, he sees me eating, he is curious, he wants some. Calvin went thru an ear tugging stage (he still does it from time to time) no ear infections, but definitely worth having Jack's looked at. ask your HV (again, no doubt) about how to move him onto more textured foods... does Jack play with his food at all or try to feed himself? (mealtimes are a mess at our place these days!) (what about finger foods too, does he like or show interest in feeding himself?)
luckily i can get Calvin to try something new if its offered smeared all over a toast finger (tried hummus this weekend!)
good luck and hang in there, he'll get there in the end!!:)

He has no interest in any food at all. I have been giving him graham crackers and he wont even put them to his lips. He doesnt pick things off the floor and put them in his mouth either. The HV said its because he doesnt like texture. Ill see what the HV says tomorrow.

My 18 year old was just the opposite...couldn't stand pureed food...so baby food was out of the question. If it didn't have chunks he wanted nothing to do with it. And guess what? He never grew out of that. :-\\\\ To this day he won't eat anything mushy....not even chocolate pudding. No mayo, no mustard, no ketchup, no sour cream. And he still orders his hamburgers plain and dry. He is the pickiest eater I've ever come across in my life. His future wife's going to have fun cooking for him. ::)

That was one of the tots in the tearaways programs was afraid of getting things on his fingers. How are you about cleanliness? My grandma was very much everything must be spotless...so it took me a while to get comfy touching food. In the program one of the children couldn't stand getting anything wet on his fingers they sort of slowly help him get his fingers in food , by finger dipping with the parents.
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

He couldn't stand getting dirty at all. I guess I was a bit OTT about messes and never really let him play in his food. :-\\\\  At his first birthday party my aunt put a piece of cake in front of him on his highchair tray so he could smear it all over himself while eating it and he wouldn't touch it...just waited to be fed and actually cried when they tried to put his hand on it. They turned to me and asked "what have you done to him that he won't even put his hands in his food?" :-[

Im also very clean with the kids. Always washing their hands, wiping their mouths. I cant help it. I think sloppy dirty babies are disgusting.
On Jordan's first birthday we gave him a cake to "mess" in. He just stared at it and said "fork, fork". Thats when I thought...uh oh, what have I done to this kid?!
All my kids have been that way. None of them have ever taken things off the floor and put it in their mouths.

She said she would like to refer him to a nutritionist. Duh! The kid IS eating. He is nearly 30lbs. Hardly undernourished. I told her all the boys started off this way and Im not too worried about it. Tonight he actually at instand mashed potatoes with Bisto gravy. Not textured but at least its FOOD and not just cereal. :)

I agree, it is a huge start. I think part of my problem, is that I was constantly washing Xan's face, as I think children with dirty faces are sickening. But I have come to the realization, this cleansing can all wait until later. If we are not leaving the house, then not such a big deal. He's a kid, he is going to get dirty.

yeah , constant cleaning (at least with wet wipes) does irritate the skin. Dermatology nurse I shadowed said " Constant cleaning an area of skin with soap or wet wipes can cause skin irritation which then makes them more susceptible to germs"

I've found that my son, if I wiped his face while I was still feeding him, well, he took it as a sign that meant eating time was over! So, I just let him get gooped up, and wipe when he's done. After all, we don't wipe when we are still pooping do we? Ok, that's just gross! Sorry about that!!  ::)

Just a thought Ricki, has he got all his teeth? I have had a terrible time getting Ethan started on solids but finally he is eating some lumpy bits and will try anything if I mix cream or yoghurt into it but when he's teething it's back to the pureed fruit.

Just wondering, have you tried a small amount of creamed corn mixed in with his mashed potato, or corn meal mush? My son loved cornmeal mush, it was one of his first foods.....of course, I had to get my mom to tell me how to make it, because they don't put the recipe for it on the cornmeal here. Anyway, creamed corn is naturally sweet, and saucy as well, and a small amount mixed in with my sons favorite food worked well.

Also, just as an aside, my son ate sooooooo much food yesterday, he pooped FIVE times!!!! In one day!!! And yes, he is still in diapers. He would come into the room where I was, the scent just wafting towards me, and I was like, Oh, Lordy child!! You have NOT pooped again!!
