Around Christmas time, there was a 'winter' Pimms...not sure what No that was?
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

Christmas is all about a snowball or a nice bottle of whisky in our house.

Yeah you're right Otterpop. This lists what all the others were though

Aw ... this site has a section named "How to Make Pimm's." I thought they were going to tell you how to actually make the Pimm's mixer -- but it's only recipes for using it. Alas. :(

Hi,

There is a "Class" system in the UK and in some circles it can be fairly strong.  As Andrea has already said, I regard myslef as "working Class" and always will no matter how much I earn or however big my house is.  This doesn't mean that I won't mix with other class's and in fact I do occationally through work.  You will very often find that the class system is its strongest at the top.  "High Class" society will rarely mix or get on with "working class", however "working class" will mix with everybody so long as they are not made to feel small by higher class people.

So to answer your question, Yes there is a class system but if you do meet people who won't mix with other class's just becuase of thier background and upbringing then I agree with other on this thread who have said they are really not worth any of your time.

Steve

Mmmmmm.... just spent an afternoon with three good friends and a GIANT pitcher of Pimm's. Perfection!  ;D

I don't find that's true at all. If you treat people as "high class" they might not want to mix with you. If you treat them as equals, they will. Same as anyone else, really.

Some British guy told me last night that it is frowned upon by ladies to drink pints in pubs-women should only order half pints.  I mean, I usually drink half because it takes me longer to drink-but if this guy is telling the truth (not sure how many he had that night) then what a crock of sh*t.

have you ever noticed  "Ladies' Portions" at some  food  counters?..  When I first got here and wasn't used  to eating so little, I'm sure I shocked my in -laws..  My mother -in -law is all about lady portions, and portioning out food at her dinner parties  QUITE small except for her  bigger built son..and my DH who is known to love to eat..  they automatically get a better sized  portion..  ::)

No, I haven't really noticed that.  But my parents always gave me a smaller portion compared to my brothers anyway-they were older and are bigger than me.  (although I can eat a good deal myself)

My English husband is working class. His family sent him to work in a print shop, doing manual labour.  He later to sent himself to university, and now has degrees in art, history and English literature.

I know, of course there are exceptions, and my SO is one of them too.  :) I took sociology a few years back in England and that's one of the things I learned about UK culture... you're more expected to stay in your "class", whereas the idea of upward mobility and aiming high is more part of American culture.
