Just do your homework on the commute. Gaithersburg is part of the hellish DC commuter belt so ideally you'd live out of that radius. But yes, I'd imagine you could live somewhere more rural...

Amen.? All moves to the Washington area should start with an analysis of the commute.

Without a doubt! I used to live in downtown Baltimore and commuted to Charlotte NC on a semi weekly basis...via a plane...and I could fly to Charlotte in one hr (door to door total 2.5 hrs, taxi, airport check in, flight, taxi, office - pre 9/11) vs. driving to into DC (about 35 miles) which could take 1.5 hrs on a good day. The capitol beltway is like a parking lot on either side (MD or VA) during rush hour.  ::) Similar time scale if I took the train and DC subway from downtown Baltimore.

An extreme example but it gives you a good idea of commute in and out of DC.

My sister used to live in Gathersburg and I used to drive down from college in PA to see and stay with her. That was like 30 years ago, so I'm absolutely no help whatsoever. But if I was ever to move back to the US, I'd choose the DC area.

My DH is in Gaithersburg this week to see if the company wants to transfer him.  There is also the option of Montreal,Canada.  Who knows, we may stay in the UK.  The house prices are high in the Gaithersburg area, though it is close to DC.  I guess we will just wait and see.

Hey there. I'm also from DC originally. I ditto everything written above, especially the part about staying out of Prince George's County (the most dangerous area to live in the DC area, HIGH crime rate per capita, even worse than southeast DC). Traffic is a nightmare in the entire DC area and I don't miss it one bit. 

That said: Gaithersburg is about as exciting as watching paint dry. And it's much more a DC suburb (closer) than of Baltimore.  On the plus side, you are very close to DC and Bethesda for your fix of nighlife, culture, entertainment, etc.

If you have the choice, I'd go for Montreal!
