Maryland
« on: April 12, 2005, 11:19:57 AM »
Hello,  Does anyone have any information on Maryland, what it is like to live, work, buy a house and so forth?  My DH may have an opportunity to transfer from London to right outside of Baltimore.  Any info or ideas you have would be great.

Thanks,Danielle

The city is Gaithersburg.......

I lived in Laurel MD and then Andrews AFB right outside DC. Laurel is nice and about 30 min drive from Balt. on the Parkway. Also going more toward the airport is Glen Burnie which is also very nice. When I lived there I rented a very nice apt for just $500 a month but this was about ten years ago.
Anapolis is very very nice and I also like Pasadena. MD is fantastic and there is so much to do and see there. If I ever moved back to the USA I would move back to MD.

I'm from the Eastern Shore of MD which in places is quite rural and quiet.  Sadly it's probably too far of a commute for Baltimore.

Hi Maddierose,

I am from Baltimore so maybe I can help. Where outside of Baltimore? Do you know the name of the area where the office is located?

Let me know and hopefully I can provide you with some feedback.

Julie

I have a family member who lives kinda on the far outlying burbs of Baltimore -- more out in the country really.  It's not far from the Pennsylvania state border.

Gaithersburg is known as a suburb of Washington DC. I think its a bit out (not close like Rockville or Bethesda) but its where alot of folks live who commute into DC. Its a bit of a hike from Baltimore (probably 1 to 1 1/2 hrs) by car. Sorry I dont know that area.

Gaithersburg, which was a country town when I was a boy in the 1950's, is a now far suburb of Washington DC.  It (Shady Grove station) is the terminus of the overcrowded Washington Metro Red Line.  Gaithersburg has a mix of downscale apartment complexes where there is drug activity, and new houses and tidy, well-established neighborhoods with excellent schools.

The typical work site in the Gaithersburg area is an attractive new office park.

Outside of Baltimore (Columbia etc...) is more affordable and a great suburban area. I really like baltimore, it's in between some great areas in the Mid-atlantic (close to DC and Phila). I have a friend that lives there and loves it too.

Just try to stay away from Prince Georges County (nearer to DC). Gaithersburg is Montgomery I think. Nice there!

Gaithersburg isn't too bad. As others have said, a real mix of houses and communities. Maryland has a lot going for it - DH and I would have no problem moving there should the opportunity every arise.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Gaithersburg is where the company is located, we can live a bit away and hubby could commute.  Perhaps there is a nice area with a 40 minute drive or so.  One of them men who works for the company lives in the mountains and drives down to work daily.
