New computers haven't been bundled with Windows CDs in years.  There's usually a hidden restore partition on the hard drive instead.
Now a triple citizen!

Which is about as much use as a non-existent CD if the disk drive goes west.

Exactly. Mine has the partition on the hard drive. It came with Vista and I've just installed XP instead anyway.

Have you tried Alt 0163? Make sure you're holding Alt down the entire time and make sure you use the number pad. If you  use the row of numbers on the top of the keyboard then it won't work.
I don't have a numbers pad on the key board of the laptop. I know about the numbers under the letters on the keyboards.
I'm using the desktop most of the time and don't have a problem.£
