Help find the pound sterling key
« on: January 02, 2008, 04:41:03 PM »
I have a Toshiba laptop and I need to use the pound sterling, can anyone explain how to do it?
I was told once before how to do it but I have forgotton. It is something like, use all my fingers and toes to push all these keys (Alt 0156). Remember it is a laptop. I know how to do it on a desktop.
Far be it for Toshiba to give the instructions. ;)

I have a Toshiba laptop and I use Alt 0163. Hold the alt key down, type 0163, then release. £

Hi there

Depending on your model of PC/Laptop the key sequence can be different - Another combination used if i remember correctly is 'Ctrl+Alt' held down and hitting the '4' numeric key.

I have a UK spec laptop and my '3' key has the '£' symbol, my '4' key has the '$' symbol and also the '€' symbol. The alt+ctrl keys held down and hitting the digit 4 key provides me with the Euro symbol.

Another way to get symbols is to open MS Word (or equivalent) and finding the character map - you can then just mouse click on the symbol you want and it puts it on the page. Using you can highlight that character and 'copy' it to memory, then switch back to the application you'd like to have the character shown in/on and 'paste' it there - usually works very well !

Cheers!

I'm on the desktop now and I think I tried the above but it didn't work. I may try the other suggestion and use the control key  because remember we don't have a numeral keyboard? "£" see I can do it on the desktop which has a numeral key board.
I know it can be done on the laptop because I've done it before.
I will check it out when I go down to the laptop. "Thanks" :)

I think on my old Dell I downloaded an international keyboard that I could switch on and off.  That allowed me to use £.  Good luck!

It is something like, use all my fingers and toes to push all these keys (Alt 0156).

That would be Alt-156, not Alt-0156.   It will work on some systems, but not others.

For Windows users, there is a character map utility which you can install from the original CD (Control panel -> Add/remove programs -> Windows Setup -> System tools).  Put an icon for it on the taskbar and you can pop it up any time to insert graphical symbols, foreign currency symbols, accented letters, etc.

For USA localized Mac users (not relevant to any posts so far but might be for someone looking in the future) it's:

Option-3

(Hold Option, press '3')

I don't think I can do that because I think the windows was already installed when I bought my TOSHIBA laptop.
I tried the Alt 156 and it didn't work.
I know it can be done because I was able to do it before.

Have you tried Alt 0163? Make sure you're holding Alt down the entire time and make sure you use the number pad. If you  use the row of numbers on the top of the keyboard then it won't work.

I just got an HP desktop a few weeks ago and was shocked that it didn't come with a Windows CD.

Did you have any "factory restore" CDs with it?
