I used to live near the place that claimed to invent them.  There are a few places in Buffalo that claim to have invented them, but most people accept the Anchor Bar on Main Street's claim.  If you ever make it to Buffalo, the Anchor Bar's wings are fair, but definitely not the best.  Their beef on weck is pretty good though.  Probably the best I had in Buffalo.

The lore is as follows: The owners of the Anchor bar had a son in college in the late 1960s.  He was coming home with some friends for a break.  He didn't bother calling his mom until late, so she didn't have time to go to the store.  All she had was some chicken wings and some condiments.  She came up with the method, and the Buffalo wing was born.

The food in Western New York is fabulous.  It's not the type of thing that gets much recognition outside the region (other than the wings) and not high cuisine, but very good stuff.  Wings are just one thing that I would suggest to a visitor in the area.

Ooo, thanks!  I live near Brixton, so there are large Caribbean food sections in all our local chain supermarkets.  Wonder if any of them have eggnog that I've never spotted before?  Will look next time - thanks for the tip!!!

aw i was born and grew up in Buffalo, went to the WingFest there last year (I looove chicken wings!) and the Anchor Bar was represented, but they weren't the best I had ever had...making your own with butter/margerine and frank's hot sauce rocks! :) just need to find a way to deep fry easily, my wok had oil shoot all over the place :(

man, i miss Buffalo food, beef-on-weck and everything is so good. And Ted's hot dogs :D Might need to plan a trip back now!

And Iceland is amazing...some of their own brand stuff isn't that great, but I have enjoyed their wings, garlic bread, southern-style fries, and indian food! lol i always tell people i've been to iceland and they are like "wow, i want to go there!" or "Bjork is from there" and I laugh and say "no...the store, great prices. i know the reason why mum's go to iceland!" :)

Maybe a chip fryer?  If you plan on using it only for wings.

How about an electric deep-fat fryer?

Didn't realise they should be deep-fried - sort of putting me off making them, all that fat!

What is beef on weck?

Beef on weck is a roast beef sandwich made with horseradish sauce on what's called a kummelweck roll.  Western NY had a large Eastern European immigrant population, and this particular roll was popular with them.  You pretty much can only get them in that area of the country:

It is an awesome sandwich.

I miss Sahlen's hotdogs, and if someone brought in a Just Pizza pizza with a honey sesame crust, I'd have a hard time resisting it.

Tykeman, some people bake their wings instead of deep frying.  They don't taste exactly the same, but you could reduce the fat that way.  I'd still brush them with oil before baking, though.

ETA: Here's a website for anyone who's interested in Buffalo food (it definitely doesn't have all of it).  It's generally not light fare.  All of it is pretty good except sponge candy (at least in my opinion).

Sounds good - like Buffalo's version of Philly's Cheesesteak (which I first encounted last year, and looking forward to one in May at the Phillies game!)

Found Egg Nog!!  It's not just in Tesco, because we got some in ASDA (Clapham Junction) yesterday.  It's a mid-size ASDA, so that means you can probably find it even if you're not near a gigantic grocery store.  They are in the West Indian section in yellow boxes that look like juice boxes you put in kids' lunches.  Very clearly labelled, can't miss 'em.  We stuck ours in the fridge before drinking, but that's not technically necessary (the thought of warm eggnog, however, makes me feel ill).  Is definitely runnier/waterier than American eggnog, but the flavor is still there!  More something you'd have for novelty or our of desperation, but still cool to find.  I think I'll be making my own again come wintertime, however, as this isn't the best substitution!
