I could've sworn it was called Casa de Mexico or something equally corny. But the brochure thing in our hotel said an actual Mexican family runs it, so that gave me hope. But I never made it there since we weren't in Edinburgh very long.

ETA: I think it was over by where all the funky boutiques and head shops and "alternative" places are, if that helps.  ;D

I think the one you mean might be Mariachi?

There are a few Mexican places in Edinburgh.  The ones I've been to are:

-Cantina Mexico on Rose Street, which was okay
-Blue Parrot Cantina on St Stephen's Street, which is pretty good (great margaritas)

There is also

-Tex Mex II on Thistle Street, which I never tried but I reckon is worth a go

I certainly would like to hear the would be-English versions of "Oaxaca" if that, indeed, were the name of the restaurant.  hehe. I can just hear some crazy versions of it now.   :P

Especially since the word "tortilla" already throws them!!! *shudders at the memory of hearing that one!*

Are you talking about a place called Wahaca? I think i remember hearing something about it before and wanted to give it a try...their menu looks alright. http://www.wahaca.co.uk/flash/downloads/wahaca_menu.pdf  Has anybody been here?

I have been to Wahaca, they have a tapas like take on street tacos, really small but tasty only downside is the price... its a bit expensive if you want to sample alot

It was this one. I remember now that it was on Rose Street, and we somehow passed it while checking out a tattoo parlour for my friend, which turned out to not have any tattoo artists, only drug paraphernalia and kinky lingerie, even though it clearly said Tattoos on the sign outside. :P

I'll try that Blue Parrot Cantina, if it's still there, next time we go, and see what that's like. Thanks! Might be worth the one hour train ride for decent Tex-Mex!  :)

How about jalapeño? I cringe every time I hear it.  Hala Peen Oh....;D

I like Wahaca well enough when I'm dying for Mexican-ish food, but even so, it's never quite what I'm looking for.  We had been warned off the Texas Embassy, so haven't tried it.

Chilango fixes my burrito craving nicely, though.  YUM!

My hubby took me to Chiquito in Birmingham once.  I was really not impressed either.  Way too much money for what you get.

I'm going to have to check out Wahaca when I'm in London again.
First time I was in London we did go to La Perla.  Food was alright, decent portions.  But the tequila wall is the part that got me.... and about 80 quid....

There's also a Mexican-y type place at Leicester Sq. There were always people there, but I never tried it. I really should be taking advantage of the Mexican places here while I can!!

Don't touch that place with a 10 foot barge pole. The food is AWFUL! I think it too is a Chiquito.

And for the pronunciation of jalapeño, I've often heard it pronounced "jalla peeeno" with a "j as in jelly", taco with an "a as in flat" and guacamole with no e on the end.

Honestly, the British get so flouncy about American pronunciations of British words, but have no problem whatsoever murdering other people's languages LOL

Edinburgh

Viva Mexico
41 Cockburn Street

Fantastic! Loved it! Great margaritas. Go early to get a table. My husband and I went in August when we were at the festival and it was just what I needed.

We went to a new "mexican" takeaway on Kirkstall Road in Leeds, where we live, and it was so bad I nearly cried!

We ate a Chiquito's in Ellesmere Port while we were on our honeymoon. I was so excited because it'd been soooo long since I'd had proper Mexican food. A-hem. It made me want to laugh. I felt so bad for DH, because he spent a bit of money on it all, too. It just made me miss San Diego even more! I didn't have the heart to say anything, nor will I ever. But, yeah, never again. One day...when we don't live with MIL and FIL, I'll be able to make some multi-cultural food! Oh....if only some one could bring me some carne asada chips or fries right now!

Bah! This might have been the one I was thinking of. I thought about going there, but we were with my Texan friend who was visiting for a week and I am sure she didn't feel an insane need for Mexican food in Scotland.  :P Next time we go to Edinburgh, I'm gonna go for it!  ;D

The first part of the sentence made me hopeful, the second part, gutted. Hahahahaha.

I'm going to be in Leeds for 2 weeks for work... are there any good Mexican restaurants?

Thanks for the advice! And yes, I agree. It's funny how badly some foreign words are butchered over there!! *shudder* :P

Salsa Mexicana
116a Harrogate Road
Chapel Allerton, Leeds LS7 4NY

I really enjoyed this place and I've heard really nice things about one in Harrogate but I haven't been. It's called Salsa Posada but it might be a bit of a trek from Leeds. There is one in Headingley called Caliente Cafe but I didn't really like it. They seem to try to put a "British spin" on things and when I want Mexican that is not what I'm looking for. Hope this helps.
