Beware the creme brulee torch!
« on: February 12, 2010, 12:15:29 PM »
My fiance and I ate Tesco's rather good Valentine's Meal for £15 deal last night, and he chose raspberry creme brulees for dessert (good man!).

Only while he was melting the sugar on top, the creme brulee torch exploded into a yellow ball of fire and singed his eyelashes, eyebrows, and a bit of his hair. And took the hair on the back of his hands clean off. He was incredibly lucky he'd just shaved and that he didn't get any skin burns, my god. We were both super shaky for the rest of the night.

And his comment several hours later - "I can't think of a more middle class way to die".

I don't think we'll be buying a new one, and instead using the instructions on the packet and melting them under the grill next time!

Wow & gah!  Glad to hear he's ok and no lasting harm done.  Out of curiosity is this your own Creme Brule Torch you already had or did it come with the meal deal?

*snort* Sorry, couldn't help but laugh at his comment.   ;)

oh no, it's our own torch, we've had it for years and refilled it a bunch of times. The Tesco packet said to put them under the grill then wait 30min for them to cool before eating (yeah right!).

Terrifying!!! Glad he is ok!

And yeah, I died laughing at his comment, even though I know the situation isn't really funny.  ;D Seriously, I'm glad your fiance is ok.

Not initially. He said something about the valve on top (the twisty bit) breaking or coming off and that's what caused the gas to escape and ignite all in one go (since the torch was already on). I was outside the galley - all I saw was a huge orange glow and a boom.
