How much should I negotiate for repatriating in 2 years?
« on: May 23, 2010, 09:17:53 AM »
I'm considering taking an offer to move to the UK for 2 years.

How much should I negotiate for repatriating back to the US in 2 years? something arbitrary like plane ticket and moving fees? or a concrete figure like 3,000 GBP?

We are facing this possibility with my husband only the other way around.  They want him to  go to the US for some time (not sure about all the details, he will be in a meeting about it next week).  They probably can't book a plane ticket two years in advance, but I think we will want a guarantee in writing that we will be expecting to move back to the UK after two years, possibly with some sort of (by this date) thing, and we will have set out in writing exactly what we expect them to pay for and provide as part of this move.  I'm not sure if they will give you just money for the plane ticket but if they did that would give you more freedom on what flights you want to take and get in writing by what date you would expect to receive that money.  Basically, get a contract between you and the company drawn up, like you are accepting a new position because you are, it's in a new country and have it be as specific as possible about when you go, when you come back, who pays for what, and that any details could not be changed without discussion with you (which is often the case anyway, but make sure).  My previous employer would often issue new contracts to people going overseas to work for another division which included many of these details.

Good luck!!

Has your company done international assignments before?  If so, they will have fairly standard terms, which are pretty common.  Most companies are going to list what they will provide -- not in monetary terms.

For instance, return flight home for assignee plus 1 family member.  Economy grade on any reputable carrier.  Booked through company relocation vendor.

Or company will pay for shipping costs on repatration.  Container of 10x10x10 to be provided or equivalent.  Booked through company relocation vendor.

Find out what your company does normally and work from there.  Hopefully they will have their own vendors and it will all be done for you.  If so, just make sure you have thought about all out of pocket costs -- return flight, shipping, pet shipping, temporary housing on return (if you haven't kept a house), costs of breaking lease or whatever in the host locations, etc.

If it isn't done for you, then think about asking for the above plus a decent monetary amount on top (£1-£2k) for your troubles.
