We forget how important something like a washer is. I went a month washing clothes in teh bathtub, I had this technique where I would stomp them like grapes. Wringing them out is no fun, nor "ironing something dry". And they never really feel clean.

I love doing laundry because it is just about the only multi-tasking I am capable of.

Before the one that died H had one of those Washer/dryer combos that died just as I moved in with him.  We were so broke we could not afford to buy a new washer for a few months.  We were blessed that his boss let us use his washer and dryer at work till we could afford to purchases a washer.  Then we saved up for a dryer.  But I remember those days really well.  The only thing that saved us now is we always get loads of Christmas money from H's Mom as she cannot think of what to get us.  It just meant putting off a project around the house.

I kind of like it! It looks like it would do a really great job of warming me up in the garden in Autumn. Alternatively, it could just be a fire hazard in a strong wind...

I agree I like it too.  We might have done it but I had already promised our washer to the "rag and bone" man before I looked online.  Or we might have taken it apart as H could have asked a guy at work to welded it together and we could have made a feature of it.  As we have loads of wood we could have burn in it from our neighbour's orchard.
