Contacting the IRS from abroad
« on: May 27, 2022, 02:28:18 PM »
I am wondering what the best/cheapest way to contact the IRS with questions about a tax return is. I have looked online but I can only find one international callers number, however it isn't toll free. Is there a best way to avoid high costs when calling?

One of our tax returns has been showing as status unavailable, quoting tax topic 152, and reference number 9001. It has been this way for a few weeks now so i would like to chase it up.

I have searched the forum but haven't found anything, so i apologise if this has been covered already.

I usually find that setting up a calling plan either for a landline (i.e. Planet Talk @ 1.2p per minute) or even on mobile bolt on - 02 charge £3 per month (cancel any time) and it's 2p per minute.

You're likely to be on hold for several minutes, although finding the quietest time to call is a good diea. Try looking at their own analytics site to see when fewest people are calling:

https://analytics.usa.gov/treasury/

A great resource.

Exactly what I had in mind with a calling plan. While in the USA we had a Skype account which is free but you could put some money into it and then make international calls very cheaply. It used to be 2.3c/minute to call the UK using our Skype account. Even when traveling abroad I would use it from the app on my laptop, tablet or smartphone.

You could try a 1 month plan with Skype for £2.40 and get unlimited minutes calling the USA

I use Talkatone, it’s free and I regularly use it to text and call the States
