Does it make a difference here or there?
« on: January 13, 2005, 03:25:29 PM »
Hi just wondering if anyone could tell me whether it matters if my fiance and I get married here in England while I'm on holiday?  If so why?  When I say matters, I am refering to the Visa process.  I understand that regradless I'll have to return to the states for clearance, right?  Has anyone done it this way?  I can't seem to get a straight answer on this...help!

As long as you return to the US to obtain your spousal visa, there's no real difference.  You do need to give notice here, though.  I think it's 7-15 days depending on where you live, but I'm sure someone who married in the UK could give you a better answer.

Uh.......and if you marry here you can't work until you get your spousal visa.  If you marry in the US and get your spousal visa there, you enter the UK with the right to work.

Just a matter of deciding what's right for you and your fiance.  Good luck!

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

As of February (I think? Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone!) it's gonna get WAY more expensive to do the deed here without a fiance visa....

It's either Feb or October.....???

But yeah, I think it'll cost another £250 all over again for the "permission" to get married here.

It is February. There is a thread in Visas & Citizenship called something like "New Rules for Marriage in the UK effective Feb. 2005." It really ought to be a sticky.
