Life in the UK Test Registration Question
« on: January 18, 2023, 11:04:35 AM »
Morning all,

I have a (stupid and anal) question. I'm registering for the LITUK test and am wondering about the name bit. It says your name must "exactly match" your ID. Then the registration page gives three lines for 1) Last, 2) First, and 3) Middle names. Now normally, I wouldn't think twice about this and I would fill it out exactly that way with my last name on line one, my first name on line two and my middle name on line three where it says "middle name." But my IDs (BRP and Passport) don't show a separate line for the middle name. They actually read: Last name on line one and First Middle together on line two (so it looks like my first name is actually two names, like the way some people are called Mary Lou, etc.) If I fill it out Last, First, Middle on line 3, the registration form won't "exactly match" any of my allowable IDs because it will show it as:

Smith
Sundance
Ellen

and my IDs actually read:

Smith
Sundance Ellen

How did you guys with middle names register? Their examples are all IDs with no middle name, of course.

Apologies for the ridiculousness but I after five years of this bureaucracy, I am mistrustful, lol and their instructions emphasise "exactly match" all over the place and "you will be turned away" "test centre will not guess" blah blah blah.

Thanks for your help. :-)

Love the Paranoia. This level of care and detail marks someone who has their sh*t together.  I like you.

Put your middle name in the middle name box if it is your middle name.
If your first name "Sundance Ellen" is a double name like "Georgia Lee" or "Anna Grace" put it all in "first name"
The BRP and Passport put our First and Middle names together under "Given Names"

They are not going to refuse you for this...  the protocols are determined with the main objective to look out for ringers taking the exam for other people.

Many thanks, mbmoffat!!

Paranoia is right--this whole visa experience has made me doubt my basic form-filling skills utilised since grade school, lol!

Thank you for putting up that brilliant ILR/citizenship application resource thread, btw. I will be availing myself of it as soon as I pass this LITUK test.

I am so looking forward to being free of all of this!

I agree. I've got several middle names and a suffix (like Thurston Howell the fourth)  and didn't pay particular attention to the way I filled in the form.  Nobody cared.

Hi Everyone

Just sharing my recent experience regarding Life in the UK test booking.

It is really important to take your exam way in advance as advised by @larrabee to me before.
A year or 6 months before submitting your application will be great. Due to some unavoidable circumtances I wasn't able to do it which is now worrisome for me.

Booked my Test 2 weeks ago for tomorrow, studied every night for the past two weeks only to find out this morning that they've cancelled my appointment due to some problem from their end.

Getting exam appointment is quite tough as slots availabilty are quite slim in our area. My humble advice is book multiple dates for your exam 4 or 5 days apart if available. So when you pass the exam you can cancel the latter right away, if not "God forbid" or it got cancelled you have another one book in and save your time and energy looking for another availabilty later.

Hope this helps.

Take care and good luck

Regards,

Peejay

Thanks jimbocz. Several middle names, huh. Am thinking of when Princess Diana reversed Prince Charles’s middle names at their wedding, lol. One of my nephews is a fourth. My dad used to call him Quattro when he was little. My nephew loved it but it irritated my BIL (who goes by Tripp-ha).

Agree with what everyone else is saying.

Also as a sidenote, I took my test in 2020, logged into the test website to get the results then didn't log back in until December 2022 to get the test reference number for my ILR application. The website locked me out so I had to phone them directly to reactivate my account. Not a huge hassle surprisingly, but maybe try to log in every once in a while? ;D I had the number saved somewhere but being paranoid I wanted to check my logging in.... :)

I got my French wife and 15 year old kid to watch an episode of Gilligan's island the other day.  They didn't get it.  The we watched a bit of Hogan's heroes.  Utterly bizarre.  I forgot that I used to watch a comedy set in a German prisoner of war camp when I was 10.
