WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says bases in Indiana and New Jersey can house detained immigrants without affecting military readiness — a step toward potentially detaining thousands of people on bases on U.S. soil. -

How did we even get this far that my first thought wasn't outrage?]
EDIT: And about the plan to house detainees in NJ. I'm told it's probably Ft. Dix, which was built in the 1930s and served as a training camp for WW2 through the Vietnam War. Paraphrasing my source: The barracks/facilities are old and have not been well-maintained. When Afghan refugees were put there they complained about their condition - not surprising, especially in winter. Plumbing, heating and structural problems galore in buildings that old are to be expected, worse without upkeep. Additionally, as a Joint Base, McGuire AFB is on site with huge runways and large people processing capacity. It's normal role is as an East Coast gateway for troops and supplies heading to Europe and the Middle East and the planes there are transports and cargo carriers - perfect for deportations. It also has a medium security prison onsite for run-of-the-mill prisoners. There are several hundred there and, compared to the old barracks option, it's a Hilton.
