The husband unit and I were thinking about taking a long trip to Italy -- anybody have ANY ideas?  Good places to go, see, or places to stay away from?

I wanted to go have lunch with the Pope so I know that Rome will be on the agenda.

Just wanted to ask  ;)

Naples, Capri, Florence, Venice, Assisi... so much to see!  How long do you want to be gone?  Pisa is a waste of time except for the 20 minutes it takes to see the Leaning Tower.  :)
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

I spent a few months outside Venice. Beautiful! But very cold this time of year.
I spent two weeks in Rome and had the time of my life. Anywhere you go in Italy would be fantastic. I heard however there isnt much to do in Pisa besides see the tower.

Florence is gorgeous!  I didn't love Rome, I liked it. I hated Venice, but that might have to do with a certain guy I was with.  Anyway, the food in Italy is so amazing and I don't usually go for Italian first.

Have you seen Under the Tuscan Sun?  Brilliant, rent it just to get in the mood!

Ohhhhh, I want to go to Italy again!!  It's true, anywhere you go is going to be great.

If you have a car, and you like 'off the beaten path' places try Civita di Bagnoregio, north of Rome (on the way to Tuscany), it is an old cliff city, with only a footpath bridge to enter, the way they get supplies is with their donkey cart, it's an etherial place, and chunks of it are falling off as the cliff erodes.  (it's not dangerous, though)  You can find pictures on the web.

One piece of advice in Rome, when you want to eat, go down some side streets where ever you are, just off the main plazas and there is always a small family restaurant where the service is genuine and the atmosphere is fantastic,  the pasta is always homemade, the prices are a little lower, you can't go wrong.

Whatever you do, have a great time and let us know what you did!  (feed us who are not traveling ;D)

I love Italy!!!  It is a great country, good food, good people and so much to see.  Make sure to check out the Isle of Capri, Venice, Assisi, and really the whole country.

DUC- be on the look out for drive thru coffee places, please report back your finds ;)

DUC, we're doing a 10 day trip there in June.

Planning on doing southern italy: Rome for 4 nights

Isle of Capri for 2 (maybe)

Poisitano on the Amalfi coast for 3 nights (or so-dependingo n if we go to capri and stay or by boat)

Also we're going to go to Pompeii and see the ruins.  :)

We haven't solidified, as you can see.

I've been to Florence and Sienna and San Gimiano and Pisa....wanted to do south coast.  It's supposed to be AMAZINGLY beautifull

Capri for 2 nights?  No way. It's a good day trip out of Naples or Sorrento but it'll be really expensive to stay there and you can see the whole island in a day.  It's one of my favourite places in Italy but I wouldn't stay there for 2 nights unless I had a mint in the bank!  :)
