PETS & Monkeypox
« on: June 23, 2003, 07:50:59 PM »
Saw this on the PETS info site today:

23 June 2003 Following an outbreak of Monkeypox in the USA the EU has banned the importation of prairie dogs from the USA and rodents of non-domestic species and squirrels from sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore in these circumstances no import licences will be issued until further notice.

Here's the link:

Is there any evidence that cats & dogs are susceptible to monkeypox or carriers? Oh, well, we weren't planning to go for a few months anyway. *Sigh*

Nope...they don't carry Monkeypox...I am not a vet....but 99% sure that the ban is for non domestic rodents and prairie dogs. :)

The bulletin is on the USA/Canada portion of the PETS site, which I thought was specifically for cats & dogs. I hope you're right, that they are only banning rodents, but it isn't clear. Maybe I'll shoot them an e-mail just to make sure...
