National Insurance Number
« on: February 13, 2005, 01:10:46 PM »
I just got a job.............finally and I need to know a little more about how to get a national insurance number. At the moment, I told the company I could use a temporary number TN (my birthdate) 260974 and F for female. Correct? Is this a recognised number that won't give me a problem? I know I have to get an appointment and all that goes along but I have to give my employer the okay that this temporary number is sufficient in the meantime. Can anyone clarify this?

Yep, your temporary number is just TN, F for female or M for male and your birthday -- totally fine for the employers to use that until you get your permanent number.  Just make sure you give them your permanent number ASAP so you won't end up paying more tax than needed (you'll be on the "emergency" code until you get your permanent number).

From what I understand--- you don't need a temporary number. Some employers choose to assign you one because their computer payroll systems need a number to be entered.

I never gave my employer a number when I first started - I just explained that I had to go in for my interview and asked for a letter to take to the interview. Then I gave them my official number as soon as it came in.

This employer does need it for paperwork as well as the P60 I think. I told them this temporary number was fine but that I would check to make sure and let them know by Monday. It looks like the number I gave is right. I just have to call for my appointment tomorrow now since they gave me a letter of employment. I have all the other evidence needed, I think, for the interview.

Thanks for the help.

hehe sorry I didn't reply on my other post. I've actually been busy for once. I got both TK Maxx and Claires. I verbally accepted TK Maxx by phone but I didn't like the way they were handling things and I was getting second thoughts. As that happened, Claire's called (the one I wanted two years ago when I got here) and begged me in for an interview and sure enough, on the spot on the second interview yesterday they offered me the post. I start in a few weeks time :):)
