Need Shipping Price Estimates
« on: February 17, 2005, 04:25:43 PM »
We are moving from US to Scotland later this year. The university where my wife will be working is going to negotiate with her soon about paying some of the moving expenses. We need some numbers quickly to base negotiations on.

How much did it cost you to move from the US to the UK? What might be a "reasonable" expectation?

We currently live in a two-bedroom duplex. We only have a few small pieces of furniture worth moving, but we have lots of books (we're both academics), some dishes and kitchenware (wedding gifts - so we can't just replace them), and craft/hobby items. We filled a 14ft truck the last time we moved, but that included many large items that would not be going overseas with us.

Right now we just need anecdotal price evidence so we have some clue how much to ask for.

Thanks,
David

Books can be shipped very cheaply by USPS using an Mbag.

Sorry, can't help you with anything else!  I got rid of almost everything and am taking my irreplaceables in luggage.

Yep, I know about the M-Bags (first heard about them in these forums in fact). I imagine we will use several of them.

We're not moving for several months so we have time to figure out the most efficient details. What we need right now is some ballpark estimates for total costs. It looks like the Uni will pay some costs, so we need to know what to negotiate for. Starting out we had no clue, really. I've been reading through the forum topics and have seen a few figures mentioned.

I moved a two bedroom townhouse 4 years ago. I used a company called Sterling International. I payed £3700. I think I had enough stuff to fill 3 crates. Give them a call. Theyre pretty fair.

Would mbags include photographs and photograph albums?

No offense, but I checked with sterling international and I have found much much better prices. I went with worl moving services. my rep is Jay Raffa. We got estimates from $7100.- $2375.  We paid $2375. That was for a weight of 2000. lbs. This included everything from loading our stuff to the truck, wrapping our furniture, fuel, unwrapping at our new flat and unloading. we are as land locked as it gets too. Midwest ( missouri), to cardiff, wales. so maybe this helps?

joni,

Sorry to butt in, but it certainly helps me.  And do you remember what companies World Moving Services used on the Missouri and Cardiff ends?

Sounds like you have a similar amount of stuff to what I shipped via Omega Shipping.

I paid approximately $1800 for 12 rubbermaid tubs, a rocking chair, two large framed prints, a trunk (full), a hope chest (full), a smll cabinet, a small end table and a quilt rack.  Packed the boxes & trunk/chest myself but they wrapped the furniture.

They do a quote via their website, I'd check them out. http://www.omegashipping.com
