Oh, and I meant to add:
In Lincolnshire there are two places quite close to each other called Old Bolingbroke and Mavis Enderby (do you use the girl's name Mavis in the USA? or is it a Brit thing?).  On the country road to these places was an old-fashioned black-and-white road sign reading

To Old Bolingbroke and Mavis Enderby

to which some wag had added a graffito, in the style of a Victorian newspaper birth announcement

:  God's gift of a baby boy.

Bill Bryson has some amusing lists of place names, both Brit and American in (I think) two of his books; and in Douglas Adams' (the Hitchhikers' Guide bloke) "The Meaning of Liff" * he uses a whole lot of place names for things for which there ought to be words, but aren't yet.  You can get a flavour of this at:

http://www-personal.umd.umich.edu/~nhughes/dna/stories/liff.html

The definition he gives to "Stebbing" has me LOLing, but if you don't mind, ladies, I'll leave it to you to find out why.

Oh Saffron~

I'm with you on the names with cum in them.  My school's initials used to be CCM, when it was a college.  The college "upgraded" to university status, which changed the initials to CUM...you can only imagine the jokes and uproar.. :o ;D  Needless to the say, they've changed the name of the school once again to avoid all the jokes and so on....oh my, don't people think about these things??? hahhahaha

I just love the town name Midsomer Norton.
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)

Hey my son lives in the next town over from Toad Suck, Arkansas.  They go to some town event there every year. Yeah I would hate to say I lived there. lol  I live close to a town called pishill. That sounds funny from an american or a british standpoint. I felt so strange telling a new friend that is where we took my fiance's kids last saturday night for a wedding reception.  lol

My df is from Yorkshire, where the names of towns tend to be a bit depressing.

Grimsby
Grimethorpe
