Pics of my week away...
« on: March 09, 2005, 11:19:54 AM »
We got a quickie SleazyJet flight to Valencia for £25 round trip and just happened to get there in time to see the start of Las Fallas.... we had been out until the wee hours and our hotel (Venecia) was right overlooking the central square.  So we got waken up at 6L30 am with a mass of humanity throwing fireworks at the floor. This is "the Awakening -La Desperta". Then at 2pm they do the Mascleta which is ground shaking loud fireworks.  Amazing.  Great to see and hear from the balcony, but even better on the ground where the sound vibrates your whole body.  Then at 8pm the Mayor and the Queen of Las Fallas and her court officially open Las Fallas with the Crida -the Shout.  This year we witnessed the devil sliding down off the towers and the angel rising up on zip lines.  The ceremony is then followed by a HUGE fireworks display.  I would love to go there next year for the closing ceremony where they burn the huge paper maiche figures.

Anyways I got to do some research and spend time with dear friends the rest of the time.  We got to stay at a friends flat in a town called St. Antoni de Calonge.  It is on the Costa Brava.  I highly recommend this area of Catalonia.  It is mostly used by Spanish tourists.

Seriously... he is a former student and I was his confirmation sponsor and like a brother to me.

Fireworks from morning to night? You sure it wasn't the annual meeting of the PMA (Pyromaniacs Anonymous)??  [smiley=laugh3.gif]
