Tinnitus
« on: March 09, 2005, 09:57:35 PM »
It's driving me insane today!!!  >:(

I suffer from tinnitus and premature hearing loss - it's hereditary (thanks, Dad!).  I'm getting over a major upper respiratory/sinus infection, and it has made my tinnitus TONS worse!  It's like microphones squealing in my ears constantly!  I don't remember it being this bad anytime in the recent past.  Anyone have any tips for how to quiet the noise in my head!!!?  :P
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Ooh, I'll try the headphones.  I'm at work at the moment and have music playing on my computer, but just through the speakers....I think I've got some headphones around here somewhere...

Can't help you but I do know the University of Maryland has a tinnitus clinic...
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Wish I could help - I suffer from tinnitus as well.  I've just learned to live with it, pretty much.  I know it gets worse when I don't feel well.  I think it's because I don't have the effort to "ignore" it as much as I do when I'm feeling *normal*.

I feel your pain.  I have tinnitus (too much loud music) and today it's driving me mad.  It's not just the high pitched squeal today, I can feel my pulse in my left ear.  BAH!

Having a fan on or something for white noise helps me.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Humming electronics REALLY makes mine worse - right now dh is playing the play station and my ringing is almost deafening.  >:( I have yet to find anything that really helps - though sometimes sinus meds do a bit as having a blocked up head seems to make it worse....

Mine's from music too - 10 yrs. working in the music biz AND being a rock-n-roll junky definitely did my hearing in. I've got horrid tinnitus and very damaged hearing on top of it - I'm constantly having to ask people to repeat themselves.

Aw, Hippie, I really feel for you. I have an elderly aunt with tinnitus. Hers came on when she was in her 50s, but it's gotten progressively worse as she's aged. She's now in her 80s and is always asking me, "Do you hear that whooshing sound?" She says it's like always hearing the sound of the sea when you hold a seashell up to your ear ... except far more annoying.    :(

Gingko biloba is supposed to improve tinnitus....I don't have anything to back it up with, but you may want to research it.  I've been using ginko biloba to treat alopecia areata and have found that there have been nothing but positive side effects.  It can act as a blood thinner, so it may be a problem if you are already taking blood thinners or if you are scheduled for surgery.  I've only had tinnitus after a few very loud concerts, and can only imagine what it must be like to suffer from it constantly.  Good luck!

Hadn't heard of using ginko for tinnitus, but I'm certainly willing to give it a try.  I'm not much of a bleeder, so I'm not too worried about the blood thinning side effects.  Thanks for the hint!

I have tinnitus and it wasn't until I was grown that I realised that not everyone has a constant ringing in their ears. I thought it was perfectly normal. Sometimes it gets on my nerves, but most of the time, I just ignore it. There's really not much else to be done, is there? I do know the more you think about it, the worse it seems to get. Distract yourself.

Another tinnitus sufferer stepping up to the plate. I've also just learned to live with it - although I've never heard head colds and such can make it worse.  It's definitely getting worse as I age which probably means I'll be stone deaf by about 70 or so.  Mayben then I'll finally get some peace and quiet! ;)

As for ways of making it better - I really have no idea. Although I might try the gingko as well.
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

I think it's more that I have less tolerance for it when I'm not well...  :P
