Anyone having 2 strike on Wednesday?
« on: March 17, 2005, 08:21:22 PM »
I am a civil servant and have found out that we have to strike on Wednesday over our Pensions as the gov't is going to change them.  As we have been told all civil servants in the gov't pension scheme will be expected to strike on Wednesday.  That's going to cause some kaos.

My DH works in the  Revenue, and they are striking on Wednesday.

Modified to add that he is not striking out of any deeply-felt principles, but just because he is lazy and will do anything to get out of work.

Lil Lurker - no-one "has" to strike, it is still considered a personal choice and although it is expected of union members, no-one has the right to tell you to do so.

I am not striking- I assist in providing essential services and am choosing not to strike, but I had a conversation today with some management who assured me that no-one should be made to feel they have to do anything.

I'm not a union member so I won't be going on strike. Besides, I don't see anything in the proposed changes to my pension scheme that's worth striking over.

Actually I agree - I don't see how people losing a days pay will make any difference anyway....

I was on strike last year for a week. It was great. First time in my life: I loved it. I stayed home and finished a project that was two months overdue. Not being in the office made it one of the most productive weeks of the year!

Well you are stuffed either way lightbulb, because if it was a work project then you were a strike breaker and if it wasn't then you are giving strikers a bad name for just being lazy so and sos who don't want to do their actual job!  ;)

Does this include those who work in the Courts? If so, that's going to hurt quite a few at my office. Interesting.

Sorry, no. The strike covered refusal to do certain areas of my job primarily involving the assessment of colleagues. This wasn't in that category. Anyway, strikes aren't about being lazy, they're tactics, and in this case, the tactic worked, we won, and more pence found its way into my wallet. Bling bling!

Looks like I'll be striking on Wednesday.  As far as I know it is the union Unison that is leading the strike and I am currently a member.  I do beleive in the strike.  They are raising the pension age from 60 to 65, even though public sector workers don't generally live longer than they did 10 years ago, and they are changing the pensions from final salery to an average of what you made in your life time.  If you worked all your life and started out at the bottom to finally get a great, high paying job the last 10 or 15 years of your working life then they will still take that mail room job into consideration at the end.  Apparently the government is doing this without any consultation and pretty much refuse to discuss it, which is why it has come down to a strike.
