Cider
« on: March 21, 2005, 05:21:13 PM »
After over 4 years in the UK I finally tried cider. DH told me it was made from apples and I love American apple cider so I thought I would give it a try. Not so bad really. I tried Strongbow. It didnt taste anything like I thought it would. What is it made of exactly? Is it indeed fermented apples?

Yes, it's fermented apples. I remember buying American apple cider and letting it go off a bit in the fridge. Wasn't quite the same taste obviously - and American cider is very cloudy.

There are different types of English cider - dry, sweet, medium. And also lots of varieties made from specific types of apples.

Yep, I live in cider country - Somerset!!

As I recall, you could get British-style cider in some American bars. It was called hard cider. Cider Jack was one brand I developed quite a fondness for!  ::) :P  ;)

I've developed a fondness for Strongbow lately as well.  Where does that stand in the dry, sweet, medium range?  Since I've nothing to compare it to I wasn't sure.

Strongbow is dry, Woodpecker is sweeter. So my DH tells me.

You can get Strongbow and another one of the big names (it'll come to me as soon as I press "post" no doubt) all over in San Fran. I remember discovering Snake Bites in college which are (I think?) illegal here? Watch out, Ricki, it goes down really easy on a hot day, but it's pretty strong - goes to ones head relatively easily!  ;)

Has anyone tried the Swedish pear cider you can buy in Ikea?
It's really sweet and absolutely gorgeous!!   4.5% and £1 per can.  :)

I haven't had that but I had some pear cider in the US that was really nice. I forget the name of it but it was made in Canada.

Isn't that the best thing about cider?    ;D

I like Magner's.

I second Anne about it going down easy and straight to one's head.

Oh. what who told you it was unladylike????  Don't listen to them!! I've always drunk cider and I've never been called unladylike because of it  (not that I can remember anyway!).

Yes, I always thought that cider was the thing women were supposed to drink.
