How much for Avidavit of Support?
« on: April 04, 2005, 09:59:39 AM »
I'm over in UK at the moment on a flying visit (returning to USA on Weds) :D and then back again for good end of May!!

The plan is for me to come back alone and then hubby join me a few weeks later!

What we would like to do is get the Spousal Visa before I come over - one more thing to worry about once here you see!  So, we are planning to get an appointment at the Embassy in New York next month sometime.

I have a job offer letter for hubby and have a lease for a house starting first week in August :D.  What I need to know is if that is enough? and how much is the 'norm' for the avidavit of support?

I have gotten in touch with the temping agency that I have always used and have asked if they will write me a letter stating that I am on their books and will be able to seek employment with them - be it temp or permanent!

Is this sufficient? will this do?

Once I get back, its goign to be a case of selling all that we have as we only intend to bring back what we can put in a suitcase and start all over again once here - but its now starting to get stressful and the sleeping nights are starting!! why I don't know!

Aint love grand -  and worth it :D !! lol

Pauline :)

hello, can anybody help me with this question please?  I just need to know how much they would expect us to have in our funds, before we started jobs you see?

Thanks.

There's no set amount, really.  As long as you have a decent place to live and can support yourselves (and any kids you might have) until you find work, you should be okay.  If you have substantial savings, that's even better.  If you're in any doubt, you could have someone in your husband's (assuming he's the UK half of the couple) family co-sponsor your application.

I'm assuming this is a US to UK move.

Yes, it is a US to UK move... I'm the UK citizen and hubby is the USC.

We do have a lease that starts first week in August, and hubby does have a letter of employment to start once he gets there.  Even though I don't have a promise of a job, I am still on the books of a temping agency that I know will be able to find me work once I get there - while I can look round for a more permant postion.

We don't have any savings you see, which is what is worrying us.  Everything that we have here, we will selling - that in turn will pay for the first months rent and a security deposit, my flight back and a small car.

Our plan is for me to go back first, get myself a job and then hubby follows me in a few weeks time when the house is available for us both to move into.  I really don't want us to have to start living with family and friends you see.  BUT, I also want to be able to get hubby's spousal visa before I go back! one less thing to worry about you see..... and thats why I'm concerned with you see - you think thats possible? even with having no savings?

Thanks.

Pauline :)

Ahhhh, I see now!   :)

Well, since you're the UK half of the couple, you're the sponsor, which means you need to be able to prove that you can financially support your husband until he can find work.  Having a written job offer for him is certainly a plus.  Same with a signed lease.  Also, you should have a decent chunk of change in your account after you sell all your worldly possessions, which will look good on your bank statement.

I do think that your going ahead to "set up house" is a good idea.  Once you have a job, I don't see any problem with the application.  I'm not sure that it'd be wise to apply for your husband's visa while you're unemployed and not yet settled in the UK.  If I were you, I'd wait until I found a job and then apply for DH's visa, just to be on the safe side.  It's a doddle once you have the paperwork in hand and he can get his visa the same day if he applies in person.

Best of luck to you both!   :)

Thanks for that :), but I really would love to be able to get his visa before I go back to UK.  I don't really fancy sending my passport via the postage service for a start and I want to be able to get back over there and just concentrate on getting myself a job.

I do have a policy that matures on August 6th, for quite a substantial amount :D and hubby is not planning on coming over until the house is available to move into, which is around the same time as the policy matures.

I would have loved us both to go back at the same time, but as I said before, I really don't want us to be living with family/friends.........and only because I think it will be a bit of culture shock to hubby as it is, plus I don't want either one of us to be under any stress, if you know what I mean!

We wont have a lot left over from what we sell here - we don't really have that much! We both started from the bottom you see 3 years ago and now we are about to do it again...mad or what ! lol.

The ideal plan would be for us to get his visa before I go to UK - one less worry there for a start! Then he carries on working here - at least there will be some money coming in still.  I will get a job once I get back and then he can join me as soon as the house is available.

We have already been through so much stress and strain with me having to get a visa to come over here and I just really want an end to it all and of course for it to go a lot more smoothly this time round!

I'm sure things will work out somehow - they usually do.

Pauline :)

I'm fairly positive that you can use copies of your passport for his application.  Each page has to be copied and notarised.  You might want to call or email the consulate to double check on that, though.  That way, you can go ahead and get settled and your DH can apply for his visa before he heads over here.

It's ok to submit a certified copy of your passport for all applications up to and including naturalisation.

For apps where there is an inherent day-count requirement, like ILR or citizenship, all pages must be certified including blank pages.  That's because they need to double check the days-in-country for ILR and naturalisation apps.  Otherwise it's just the non-blank pages and some consulates accept just the photo page for visitor sponsors.

As to who is competent to certify, most people opt for a member of the legal society or an advisor, but in the absense of those, it's also ok for a policeman, vicar, MP or GP to do it.
