New here
« on: July 30, 2003, 10:59:04 AM »
Hi all...I moved to Yorkshire from Texas in April 2001.  I'm new here; I used to post on the American Expats board until I fell out with some people there.

Hope to make some new friends here!

I grew up in Dallas...left in 1993 to go to UT in Austin, came back in 1997, left again in 1999 to go back to Austin where I stayed until 2001, when I came here.  If Houston is the 7th pit of hell, Dallas is definitely in the top 10.  Austin was terrific, but I can't stand the weather and there aren't any tech jobs left anyway.

Texas is a great place to visit, but after 25 years there, I was a bit sick of it.

In Dallas, we have a world-class symphony and fine arts museum, as well as the Sixth Floor Museum devoted to the assassination of President Kennedy and its aftermath...there's also Southfork Ranch if you were a fan of the TV show "Dallas," plus great shopping.  Chanel and Hermes have boutiques in Dallas, to name a couple.  There's the West End, which is more family-oriented weekend and nighttime entertainment (lots of restaurants), and Deep Ellum, which is full of nightclubs and bars.  In Irving we have Texas Stadium where the Cowboys play, and the Ballpark in Arlington where the Rangers play.  There's also Six Flags over Texas (the ORIGINAL Six Flags), which is FANTASTIC...and a water park across the street.  It used to be called Wet n' Wild; it's called something else now but I can't remember what that is.  In Fort Worth there's Sundance Square, which is actually quite fun and the parking is free...and Fort Worth's wonderful science and fine art museums, plus the Omni Theater, an IMAX theater that's been operating for over 20 years now.  It's GREAT.

In Austin there's not much for tourists to do except visit the university...there's a fine museum on campus that houses the University of Texas' copy of the Gutenburg Bible...UT is one of an extraordinarily small number of institutions in the U.S. that has one, though in the U.S. only Harvard has a complete copy.  What is recognized as the world's first photograph is also on display in the same museum.  There's also Austin's great scenery and in the summer, nightly shows on the Congress Avenue bridge when one of North America's largest Mexican Freetail bat colonies comes out for the night.  It's really something.

In San Antonio, there's the riverwalk...a bit contrived for my taste, but it's still great fun.  There's the Alamo...which everyone should be forced to visit, since few places capture the spirit of American tenacity quite like it, and old missions and remnants of settlements outside the city.  There's also Sea World and Fiesta Texas, which is a Six Flags theme park.  I visited Sea World in San Antonio for the first time 3 years ago and it's a first-class theme park.

Houston...I don't know much about it, but NASA's Mission Control is located there.  I visited in 1988, when shuttle flights were still suspended, but it was still wonderful.  The rocket park is great; the rockets are 100% to scale.  Houston also has Astroworld, which is probably the BEST AMUSEMENT PARK EVER...the roller coasters are out of this world.

So yeah...visit Texas!
